I think the show bred strains would still occasionally throw a decent worker which would find it's way into the working dogs gene pool, gradually lowering the quality.

Doesn't really seem to of had that effect on Collies, Labradors, Pointers, Foxhounds, Spaniels, German Shepherds etc etc. All popular show breeds while also having a strong following among working dog folk.

There's room for both in the dog world IMO

i think it pretty much destroyed the german shepard in the uk,thats why we import them now from eastern europe.

i certainly think there will be detrimental effect on all those breeds, its just theyre essential or very important in their role so people have strived to keep quality working lines alive.

i think completing working trials being a requirement to enter shows would help a lot.

It ruined our show line GSDs, there's always been small pockets of serious working bred GSDs in the country, just not bred on the scale or to the standard of the DDR etc dogs.

Working trials for most breeds as a requirement to enter shows would be a terrible idea IMO, the people buying show dogs don't want a working dog they want a fanny licker that's happy with the odd stroll in the park. Can you imagine the average show going "fur mummy" with say an English Mastiff with a correct working temperament? Would be a disaster.

Working line dogs for working folk and show/pet line dogs for the pet owners, it makes sense.

we're goin well off subject now,but i highly doubt you'll find a decent GSD thats family have been here a long time.

you get the occaisional good worker with show a blood, and that means every now and then a turd enters the gene pool.

thats without talkig about the damage popularity can do a breed, especially when theres 2 types that look near identical.

but lets not hijack this thread anymore.

The true hard guarding GSD, has nearly gone. Its a crying shame, as they were once seperb dogs at the job. Before the Berlin wall went down, thats where the true Greman shepherd was, used by the border petrol, they did not take any prisoners i can tell you now!, they wanted to kill people, just like all your lurchers want to kill rabbits. The german shepherd around now, are not a patch on them. They are too soft!!

Below, is a rare GSD, lines going back to the pre berlin wall days,.....this what you want to guard your home, a dog that wants to kill, not aprehend, however, times have moved on, and humans are getting softer...

The old east German dogs were certainly some tools but I don't see what's supposed to be impressive about that video? Just a cur snapping and barking on a chain. I could show you plenty of old farm collies that act just like that.

Thanks saluki I enjoyed them.u wudnt get past that fence in one piece in the second video

I have a ikc German shepherd hes eight.his back isn't too sloped hes big enough but hes not working lines although I was told his mother was bred from service dogs.realy good attitude to him never any bother and always alert watching the back garden.i have piece of mind that no one will get away with coming into the garden.even as a pup when I first got him he used to sleep outside the shed always watching so no one would come in.never barks unless theres something there be it cat or intruder ha.

It's terrible to see the deformed show dogs so much so it's good to see the real deal.the fella I have is kennel club type and doesn't work and seems to suit watching a garden so do u think a properly bred dog from working lines wouldn't suit being just a watch dog and not real security work

It all depends on the dogs breeding and what it is bred for. The modern gsd are mainly show bred and as you say, deformed. Some are bred for work and need a lot of training to keep them happy. Some have very high drive, so if just left, will go nuts. Their is still some good working/guarding gsd around and some have diluted blodd in them from before the berlin wall went down.

If your dog does its job and your happy with him, then thats all that matters, but if your in doubt that he will aprehend an intruder, then a pup from better working lines would be the way to go. Most these day have to be trained to become a good guard, attack dog, back before the wall came down, they just did it by instinct, it was in them. If you look at the modern german shepherd, a lot may bark, but not attack, even if that at all.

good thread that mate, its the same really with most guard breeds today, ive seen few vids where people thought they had guards dogs , but the bloke in the vid just walked right in lol. what it is if you give off fear to any dog that will encourage it to bark or bite in some cases . a proper pro will show no fear to dogs and that's how they get in the 1st place . I know a chap who been trains bel mals, gsds for the raf.and army and picked pups for the police few times and been on the telly. I asked him about certin breeds regards as guards , that's bull breeds, mastiffs types , rotties dob,, collies, gsds, mals, d/s whats the best. he said all these breeds will guard , but bull breeds are docile nature, pits not natural guards, abd+ dobs not bad , but the herding breeds would be his choice , as very alert by nature , and strong guarding instinct . he likes bel mals think very good dogs if bred well, but thinks well bred gsd from working lines are prob the best, as a 80lb male would stop any man a good one are very powerful, brave , with plenty of guts . would be the breed he go for  ive got a 1x gsd x grey Buck who as soft as shit with people + dogs , and never barks lol , I showed Buck to him and told him what he was like lol , he said its a feckin good job with his size+power he is , he showed me a good size mal doing bite work bloody hell strong dog, he said Buck be twice as strong as that point taken  he still a wimp though lol.

Thanks Bird. Very true about dogs scenting fear, they can smeell it off somone if their scared. In a lot of cases, if you walk passed them, not showing any fear, they wont bite, but the well bred gsd will if trained to do so. However, its the fright that they home in on, just like you said... ...as said, the passed pure pre berlin gsd, were the biz, any that showed a slight softness, or none biting attack instict, were put down...! Your Buck, would kill a man in seconds....if.. he was so inclined, but luckly for you Bird, is a docile, yet good hunting dog... :) ..

I am very lucky really with Buck, because I can take him anywhere with people and dogs and he sound no prob at all , he walked up to some young kids the other day and was waging his tail licking there hands , the kids were laughing lol, but as you say in the field he very different dog very switched on , knows how to use his teeth .

Never seen a first cross, but I've got an old dog with a bit of irish terrier blood in him, tightest running style I've ever seen used to be a real pleasure to watch him turning them inside out

This is him in his earlier days the old boy is 12 now and still jumps up every time I pick a lead up, just wish he was 2 again

Do you know how much is in his breeding? I’ve a line bred saluki whippet bitch and a friend of mine has a young 3/4 whippet 1/4 Irish terrier dog If he makes grade I would consider putting him to her ??

No I don't know how much mate, these dogs were noted for their sharp running style, not as tactical as some of the usual saluki bred stuff, but good to watch I like the sound of the breeding you're considering
