Life isn't that simple!

 

The .22WMR is currently the most powerful Rimfire readily available in the UK, but some ammo runs out of energy quicker than a HMR, so the HMR may be more powerful at times at some distances. But that isn't the story.

 

There are a lot of ammo types/weights available for the WMR, far more than the HMR, the 30g Hornady V-Max is excellent in mine, and stops everything when used appropriately.

 

The WMR/HMR/LR will most likely kill a fox to about a mile, if you got lucky, but it is far more down to you where you put the bullet, and the bullet type as opposed to how far will it kill.

 

As I said, there is no simple answer to your question, but if your objective is regular distant foxes rather than close, you may want to consider a small centrefire!

Having a Savage model 24 combination rifle / shotgun in 20 bore / 22wmr, I keep my rifle shots on fox under 100 meters. As Deker said rightly, it comes to making the best of the ammo in combination with your rifle. I'm using Hornady V-Max in 30 grain and that combination work OK for me. Also have used RWS SP .22 WMR (40 grains JHP), great cartridge as well, but rather pricy.

 

For getting a dedicated fox rifle stick to a CF. much more versatile

Given what's been said elsewhere, number 1 consideration is to make sure your certificate is conditioned for it as each calibre is restricted to the species permitted against it (assuming the Irish certificates mirror the English ones). So you can't just take a HMR or WMR and shoot foxes if you only have authorisation for eg ground game and other small quarry.

 

As for general advice, stick to CF against fox for most situations unless you're a very good marksman or shooting at very close range.
