FERRETBOY 680
Decided to take Gem my lurcher pup ferreting yesterday. I was only using the one longnet which was a pain to run out because of the hard ground but eventually managed 3 5yd sections between a hedge and fence. Only worked the one albino jill who normally gets second place over my other polcat jill. I saw five or so rabbits go to ground and Gem was having a sniff about. The jill was straight onto one and she caught it just inside the hole. Gem was aware the rabbit was close by and started pawing the hole and whining. I pulled that one out, let Gem have a sniff then popped it in the game bag. The Jill was working her little legs off, the rabbits wouldn't shift but kept on coming to the mouth of the holes. Gem started to get bored and layed down whilst I tried sticking the ferret behind a rabbit. All I was after was a bolt to excite Gem, let her mouth one in the net hopefully. It took a little while but eventually it happened and two rabbits bolted. One went back down another hole but one goes straight into the net and gets proper tangled. Gem rushes over and gives the rabbit a bit of mouth. I praise Gem, dispatch the rabbit and let her have a good sniff of it . I then tried the opposite side of the net where they was 3 or 4 holes and after entering the ferret this happened ( watch the video) Well chuffed with her as you might tell. So chilled out and taking everything in her stride. Even caught her first half grown rat last week and retrieved a rotten fox head. I cant wait for next year. Just don't want to rush things and will try my best with all her training first. good hunting Rew 8 Quote Link to post

Matthew Phillips 36
One little bit of advice, as soon as you've dispatched the rabbit quickly paunch it and give her the heart, kidneys and liver (if healthy) as it will be a reward for her. Quote Link to post

Do you think this will help to make the dog a better worker ??? Quote Link to post

Tiny 7 1,694
I do head feet and all. That little bitch never seemed fazed in the slightest there. Handled it very well for a young pup. . Keep at um 1 Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
Great stuff REW, looks like Gem has made a great start. Best of luck with her. Quote Link to post
FERRETBOY 680
cheers chaps, shes learning a lot from Fly. When I watch her its like watching fly all over again. Fly self entered at 25 weeks catching her first daytime bunny and it looks like Gem is heading that way. She isn't fazed by water even which I love in a lurcher. I threw her a tennis ball into the trent and she took the plunge, swam out 10 yards and back again with the ball. Tiny, I only asked because I thought it would be a good alternative to feeding veg. What you reckon? Quote Link to post
