Totally different to rabbit snares and made out of different material too...IMO. Quote Link to post
RemyBolt 420
As usual, I have gone over to the BASC website and popped a quick question over to them. Quote Link to post
peeps_76 17
The law says target animal should not get hung, but then it's legal to use squirrel poles with snares on.....it's like rabbits caught on a pig mesh fence sometimes they jump about, and go through fence higher up so technically hung themselves so to speak...yet it's legal to fence snare rabbits..there is no clear understanding its a bit of a grey area hi guys, interesting thread! but i think its worth mentioning that the laws are different around the country. Scotland has its own rules around snaring. you need to complete a coarse, get a number issued from police, have a tag on every snare with your number and there is NO fence snaring permitted. cheers Peter Quote Link to post
MR TEA POT 1,287
Good point peeps I was speaking as a ENGLISH man so to speak ? but yes ENGLISH laws and Scottish laws on snaring are Differant cheers peeps ? 1 Quote Link to post
RemyBolt 420
Still no response from BASC. The issue I'm facing is the stops. It needs to be at 13cm, if I remember correctly. The thing is, most rats will just hop straight through there. There should be a more specific outline about the difference with rabbit snaring and rat snaring. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
I would try some plastic coated 0.6 7 strand steel for the rats..... BASC won't have replied because they probably won't know the answer. Quote Link to post

gamerooster 1,179
Which makes 0.8 Quote Link to post
RemyBolt 420
Which makes 0.8 Yes. But 0.6 x7 strand would be a hell of a lot more! 4.2. Or am I reading that totally wrong and J Darcy means 7 stranded plastic coated wire, totaling 0.6? Quote Link to post
gamerooster 1,179
Sorry mate, thought he meant 0.67, didnt see the space Quote Link to post
heritage 202
The rules that apply to rabbit snaring aren't applicable when it comes to snaring rats / using benders ect.... There classed differently (ground game)... This is also the case when selecting suitable traps for each species. Rabbit / squirrel traps are specified on the stao, Rat traps are readily available in most stores across the country. Quote Link to post

I meant 7 strand wire, that is 0.6 thick.....sorry for not being clear.I have seen brass snap with rats and more so with squirrels. Quote Link to post

Heritage so are you saying that both squirrels and rats can be whip snared, ? or snared with a snare that will 'hang' them? legally. Quote Link to post
