For your sanity, aswell as your confidence, i would snare when the numbers are high, a lot higher chance of a catch then, trust me on this one, i learnt to snare where there was only a handfull of rabbits, was frustrating at times, but i got there in the end

That makes sense.

I as thinking quite inverse though. If I can successfully snare rats when there are only a few around, then I have learned the skill well and the successes would be down to ability and not luck. BUT, the reason I'm seeing it that way is because I plan to snare only as a supplement to my normal air rifle pest control technique...shoot them in the head! The idea is to catch the gun-shy rats.

If your interested in using snares for rats, Alan salmon @ master hunter did a short instructional DVD that shows the construction and placement of benders.

Rem,   Lots of excuses, would you like us to start a hardship fund for you?   Could always buy an external cd player that plugs into laptop, just a thought

Woodgas away for a week so it not get posted till Monday just a heads up

No mate, never, snared rats, but snared most over things bar rats and mink, just something ive never thought of trying, i can get better results faster with traps

I've got a load of traps, but am going to try popping snares along some of the routes they run and 'gateways' e.g. holes in the wall. The traps will be baited and put in the feeding areas.

Whip snaring i think socks, on a bender....... does anyone have a diagram/ plan for a whip snare?

I need to check this, because it seems whip snaring is illegal for rabbits, but could be legal for rats. At the moment I'm just thinking of popping a snare by the opening's they come through. It'll just be to tether them in place to dispatch in the morning. Unless a cat gets to them first.

I use a whip snare with a baited trigger for rats and I find this works better than a run of the mill whip snare as you are inviting the rats in with bait ... I also use the hollow plastic tunic as it never loses its whip doesn't rot and last forever .... Here is how it works .......

This is the whip with the trigger and snare attached ..... The white tape is just to draw your eye to the snare wire .....

This the bar that the trigger fits into

Here is a picture of one of the pegs that holds the bar and trigger in place ... There is a peg either side of the bar ......

Here is the whip set .....

So you simply dab your bait on the trigger stick with the snare loop sat In front of the bait the whip is pulled down and the notches of the trigger and the bar are lined up ... The bar is then placed inside the holding pegs and is held in place by the tension of the whip ... Mr rat comes along puts his head through the loop to eat the bait ... Moves the trigger that release the trigger and up goes mr rat caught perfectly around his neck .........
