DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Back round on the chicken farm Friday night... See one in a big grass field, but as soon as the light hit him he turned and ran straight to cover, tried a loud squeak to make him stop and look back for a second but he carried on straight into cover... Next field, sat in the long grass was a fox about 80m, but wasn't a safe shot, so lights out and crept round to the side of him, Lamp on and wham 50 yard head shot... Short snout on this one...But in good condition, been on the chickens no doubt... So happy farmer again... Then last night back out on some wheat stubble, rabbit shooting for a farmer before he ploughs and seeds it. See two foxes about 100ms out so a little walk back to the truck to pick up the big lamp and .223, walk over to a fence, with the rifle resting on the fence and left arm underneath the stock to steady it, it took me a second to coordinate the lamp and scope together. But the crack and thump resulted in another one... Then later on back on some local permission, I saw a glimmer in the lamp a long long way away, so thought it best to drive round the road all the way to the other side of the field. Pulled in the gateway with full beams on and saw him running right to left. Got the rifle on the mirror following him in the scope and lost sight of him as the headlights was just a tad to low, only for him to stop and show his eyes as he looked back. Could only just make him out with the crappy old hawke. Crack, the rifle rang out, but I didn't hear the thud. Thought I had missed him but a walk out to where I thought he was, I found him... I know the odd fox knocking about can help keep the rabbit numbers down, but when there are loads about there is no chance for anything else like pheasants, ducks and leverets. Also they can really disturb the rabbits when you are out on a pest control job for arable farmers... I know most on here will already know this, but thought I would explain why these foxes are being controlled for those passing through the forum. The chicken farm takes no explanation... Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post
