1St Of The Season ..!

Recommended Posts

Having just finished a job that was originally going to take a couple on months but ended up lasting nine , a few weeks rest was in order , that sorted I can now get back to stalking .Getting back last week from the sunny country I managed to get out four times before tonight, blanking on deer I managed to knock over three foxes which pleased a couple of keepers. During my outings their where plenty of deer showing but no bucks ...Not really something I was to concerned to about as I had the new dog out and was more than happy she had her 1st encounter with a live deer , sitting still & quite with a doe 35m away .

Tonight I planned to sit up over one of my places (the chicken farm) as an earlier recce showed a fair bit of buck slot around the pond & as the seat , which is really a shed on stilts, overlooks the pond I couldn't fail :whistling:.An hour in & four does with three fawns appeared but never settled , they new something was wrong , the seat while being comfortable its not the highest seat I have and with a stiff breeze blowing I was wondering if the could scent me .Two more small groups of doe's came out & did the same as the first bunch , at 100m to my right they spooked , time to change the plan , never good idea as the deer where moving but they could definitely sense me .I left the seat made my way down past the pond on my right to opposite to where the deer where going in , whilst now at ground level I did at least have the wind in my favour .True to form a pricket came out dead opposite the seat to what would have been a 50m shot ..I was now 150m away shooting of sticks , as I watched him grazing slowly towards me I could see he was a cracking pricket with two 10inch spikes , now I'm wondering weather or not to leave him .That decision never needed to be made because a huge buck appeared directly in front of me , not a good head but a huge body , he thrashed a couple of low branches , marched out into the field & stood looking at the pricket , a cough got his attention and a 6.5 got him ...

He was massive , the biggest wild fallow I have shot , in the larder at 1971/2lbs , he had lived very well through the summer & made me work bloody hard to get him in the coldroom ...

that is stunning mate i have only shot a young doe im yet to get anything nice for the wall... i here rob is mounting it for you ..he will do an excellent job .

Camo your right Rob is mounting the head but its not for me .I promised Rob a head to practice on last year but never managed to get anything that looked like a fallow buck , if it turns out as good as the Roe he did for me it will be stunning ..the Roe by the way I had done because it had a seventh tine coming out of the coronet & was a bit different .My "trophy wall" consists of a fallow buck skull mount only special to me , two seven tine roe heads & a red my pals wife wont let him have at their place ...not bad for 41years stalking !..
