shropshire dan 467
Hi all as many of you may know i have recently got my .22-250.I have had 4 foxing trips and resulted in no kills, where am i going wrong? My method is to basically turn up with a mate who lamps and start calling. I call for a 30-40 seconds and then stop for 2 minutes gradually getting quieter. Once we spot a fox we turn off the lamp and call quietly but i'm usually finding once the lamp goes back on Charlie has vanished. This happened last night spotted a fox within 20 minutes of calling but was on top of a hill about 220 yards out, he just sat still and watched us for about 3 minutes and wouldn't come any closer or off the top of the hill. We then turned off the lamp hoping he will come in and after about 2 minutes of quiet calling put the lamp back on and he was gone I'm getting extremely frustrated as i now have a rifle with more than enough power and i'm also really confident with this setup out to 250 yards, just not working out for me.Thanks for any help and advice AtbDan Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Hey Dan don't get disheartened mate, they're Wiley creatures and can be difficult and very shy, I've just purchased a nitesite wolf to help me with after dark work on both rabbits and fox and although really pricey at £640 I'm sure it will help me out tomorrow night on a big session out for the first time with it...I'll keep you posted but keep trying mate and remember not to over do the foxing and give them chance to come back if you've been rumbled by them as this has happened to me also mate. slipper 116
It will happen mate, I'm having the same, it's just a quiet year for foxes in my area, they were everywhere last harvest, this time hardly anything, I have only seen 4 this month and shot 3 of them, I have been doing more rabbit shooting though to be fair, but last year on the stubbles I was shooting 2 or 3 every time I went out, you can only Shoot them once I suppose, the foxes your seeing are they the ones you have shot at and missed with the hmr lol? Thought there would be more of this years cubs about though, what are the rabbit numbers like on your permissions? Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Thanks chaps. Havnt got many rabbits to be honest but the places are covered with charlies Quote Link to post
Bigad 136
Try night vision sound like its knows the lamp means danger. Do you only use filter on the lamp if so try a different colour one first a bit cheaper Quote Link to post
Bigad 136
Also what caller you using got a difficult one using a green filter and 2 shot gun shell brass ends stuck together as a caller and it came in to shotgun range. I can knock you one up if you want Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Using just a normal plastic fox call and white light will get a filter for the lamp. Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Lots of techniques for foxing dan, try a few ideas mate. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Bigad is kindly sending me a homemade call so that may work with it being a different sound. Thanks again bigad. Will have to try some different lamping techniques aswel maybe next time I'll try leaving the lamp on charlie Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
I think we'll end up taking multiple callers with us when we go out as its quite common that some arnt reactive to certain ones and then they are other times. shropshire dan 467
Cheers lads. Will have a look at some other call options Quote Link to post
toby63 1,236
You might consider wind dirrection first thing you should do or any 1 serious about fox control . And to know your land very well 1 Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Don't call them unless you need to, you have a gun that you are confident with to over 200 yards!! You can use that to your advantage if you know the land well. Driving the fields you will cover lots more ground, and see lots more foxes. I wouldn't fancy sitting about kissing my hand in an area where they are shy. We moved about loads last night, scanning fields and as soon as we saw them eyes the lamp and motor was off, lamp back on ready to take the shot... Good luck.. 1 Quote Link to post
