Plenty of scientist have beliefs, but what gives those beliefs or hypothesis credibility is testing them, making logical predictions based on that belief and searching for it. What prediction does a flat earth theory make? That there is an edge? That it's not continuous? Both of these were easily proven false. The predictions that evolution has made have been found! And finding circumstantial evidence to back up a theory isn't quiet the same thing as proof is it now .........evolution has not to this day been proven has it ? You can say that about any branch, level, theory in science. The more you test it the more credibility is gains...... Flat Earth fell over at the first hurdle. Stand at the coast, look out to sea and tell me why you can't see the end of the world? Flat Earth can't make a single unique prediction that could give it credibility. By modern scientific standards it could never be considered science. I take your point, what we believe now can be proven, in simple terms, wrong with a single observation. But lets not pretend that all scientific 'beliefs' have equal credibility. If you're going to compare a flat earth theory to evolution, then we might as well compare it to special relitivity, newtonian mechanics etc and just rubbish everything. A species adapting it's gene pool to favour conditions has been observed, the hypothesis was that this has happened since day one leading to the diversity of life on Earth, that hypothesis has made certain predictions, some of which have been found.
