Guest vin
Hello all Well today was the day to make a start on the rabbits . Tomo can't get out at moment because he's pregnant ..lol But young Trigger was well overdue a visit with Buster and like promised he was here 5AM on the dot, We had steady drive up and arrived nice and early. Trigger was off like a man on a mission with my old hob and a bag of nets. He was halfway up the hill before I had got my boots on and locked the van. By the time I got close to him for the long walk upwards he had got 5 bunnies on the bag, one sooty included . I stood back and watched him do another set aboveboard and he got another put of that one in no time . Buster was on good form and caught a belter running down the hill through cover, We then split up and went our separate ways ..him on a mission and me just wafting about as usual, letting dogs mark up. The young dog caught the 1st bolter and marked up well today. But after bolting about a dozen or so from different Warrens the nets had to come out of the bag. I was letting them bolt with no nets and noticed that there was still a few youngish ones about3/4 grown . So I dropped them back in when ferret came out and saved them for a future date . I must admit that I had a very steady day today ,taking time to enjoy myself with the dogs and my hobs. I only worked 1 hob and do did Trigger.but they both did ok considering they're fat and unfit fr A long summer off . I netted the odd set and leftist for the dogs to have a bit of fun.. I must have bolted about 20 and the dogs failed miserably to catch them as they hole hopped along the stoney steep banks. But I didn't care I was just enjoying being there . I walked back down to van with 6 bunnies out of a possible 20 - 25 approx of I could have been bothered to net up everything .. But sod that. I knew Trigger was doing ok as he was on a better patch than me , when we met up mid afternoon he had caught 19 to my pathetic 6. Lol. I'm sure John will tell you more about his day ... But for me it was great . I had a good luck around and found some great warrens to do in a months time . Not a bad start to the ferreting... I had 20 with the lamp last week, so things are looking promising ATB Vin Quote Link to post

I had 20 with the lamp last week, so things are looking promising ATB Vin it was bloody warm mate, perhaps a little to warm for bolting rabbits to my dog i thought, also there is plenty of daylight hours still so it could have been a long day if we wanted to make it that way. my lamping dog done o.k he marked up well, a few times i done some warrens he hadnt marked and just has he had thought they were empty. i missed a few during the day although i was netting up. the long tufts of grass and the fact i had never ferreted any of the warrens before meant i was missing some holes and even miss judging the size of some of them. a couple of times the dog made up for my mistake by catching the odd one that thought they had escaped. i put one or two bunnies back as they were not quite big enough. having said that i never caught a pregnant doe all day. all in all it was a good and very enjoyable day out thanks.
