pie-eater 377
I recently read about soaking apples or potatoes in creosote and rolling them into a warren to stink the rabbits out and push them into other warrens. I have a realy awkward warren on my land and was thinking about giving it a go. Anyone tried this method? Not sure of the legality? Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,222
Not somthing I have ever tried,,but seen it done on a Warrener film,,,and of course read about in books ect,,,,you can youse newspaper scrunched up aparantly.... Quote Link to post
vanman1 411
I done it years ago on a bramble patch and it worked but you need to be sure there are empty warrens near by.If i remember rightly i done potatoes cut in half and bits if rag soaked them for about a week then rolled and pushed em as far as i could get.It was a lot of aggro and i wouldnt do it again unless forced to for land owner. The one 8,482
I did it with scots pine cones and snared the rabbits on the boundary fence when somebody wouldn't let me control rabbits that where giving the small holder next door a load of grief worked a treat 3 Quote Link to post
pie-eater 377
Ceers lads. I think Ill see what the landowner thinks of the idea and go from there. Quote Link to post

The one 8,482
You do it right the land owner won't even know about it just leave one or two holes open and I put the cones a arm length into the burrows so they couldn't be seen 2 Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,222
There is a similar method I have herd used and again watched on a Warrener film,,,but I've not tried ,,, Instead of stinking them out,,, you block the holes up completely an arms length down the holes,,, this needs to be done whilst there out feeding,,,then walk them in ,,a bit like longnetting,,and they go in there holes but sit in front of the blockage down the hole,,,and you pull them out. Anybody tried this,,,sounds straightforward ,,,but I imagin it must be difficult blocking the holes with out being noticed by the rabbits 1 Quote Link to post

The one 8,482
Is it just me but when im out walking the dogs if i see a few rabbits near a burrow i consider it a challenge to get one or two ?. Quote Link to post
pie-eater 377
Tomo I read about that method in Fred J Taylors book. He suggests blocking the holes at arms length just before crops are harvested. I know the perfect place to try it next season. Edited September 1, 2014 by pie-eater Quote Link to post
Rowan 308
I never have , but I know of a gamekeeper who used to soak pine cones in renardine, when you could get it , roll them down the holes and stand back to shoot them as they bolted with his 12 bore. Quote Link to post
young man 225
Put a coal bag or empty sand bag up the burrow with the front of it out pin the front of the bag at the hole and walkthe rabbits in Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
Put a coal bag or empty sand bag up the burrow with the front of it out pin the front of the bag at the hole and walkthe rabbits in I'd have thought it would be easier and more productive to set purse nets and then backnet them. Or use a longnet. But like Tomo says the challenge would be doing it without spooking the rabbits. Quote Link to post
