I used to run a piece of land that held a decent hare or 2,drystone walls,open woodland and a few reed beds,you could nearly walk to the spot that hares would be sat,we ran one time after time,if it failed to lose the dog amidst the trees it headed for the reeds,if they where still on its tail it headed for the open fields and tried to exhaust them,it then had an habit of taking them back into the wood or reeds,as the dogs got educated on each gallop they had the hare at their advantage,then it headed for the walls,through a gap in a corner,then back tracked on itself a few feet further down,this hare had the making of all that pursued it.One day we headed over the same land,the gap in the wall was blocked and a patch of fur was testament to the level some ignorant soul undertook to make a kill,we unblocked the gap and left the land with heavy hearts for a pointless and unrewarding kill,the reward for some is far more rancid a flavour for others.

i can imagin mate, that hare deserved the respect of every hunting man, just shows that to some the kill is more sought after than a piece of nature that was more than testing for dogs.

should of definitely given it the respect it deserved and let it breed on

It's a pity more lads didn't show the Hare more respect

Gave it fair law and really test their dogs

Summer hares or winter kick ups prove nothing.

Genuine lads know this.

What saddens me is the clips of kickups in snow and on plough and the mindset behind the person that thinks it praiseworthy and is happy to film it and post it on a public forum.

He run the best of all the dogs on the day

Would that be the EELC Club or the greyhound club?

Greyhounds, the day in question was near six mile bottom.

It's a pity someone couldn't find and post the clip of that Waterloo Hare launching its self into the air and spinning mid air with the greyhounds tearing beneath it

She spun round mid air landing in opposite direction of greyhounds gaining valuable time thus eventually escaping to the applause of the crowd.

Great clip showing the Hare the respect it so deserves.

some good reading in this thread. did any ex track dogs do any good at coarsing?

John Bromiley the Greyhound Coursing trainer had a dog in kennels called Peasedown Erin ,it pulled down every time it ran,often on the run up. It had a wonderful gob and was an ex tracker that had been barred for turning it's head, we tried to get a lining off it on to a lurcher bitch, the fee was very reasonable but the dog wouldn't go for it, we ended up using Straw Silks.

 

I remember John talking about that dog Inan, if I remember right though it did line a few bitches...

 

John judged the East Of England Lurcher show one year, I was his steward.He's a good judge of confirmation and gave everyone there money's worth.

I and" Rangers Man ,"who sometimes comes on here were catching up dogs for him at the Anglia Cup in Swaffham a couple of decades ago.I'm not into showing but I remember many moons ago, he had an old fashioned Norfolk type of lurcher called Isaac, it won just about everything in the ring.

A well known pro boxer from s.yorks had an awsome hare catching lurcher in the late 70s that was also a mix of deerhound collie and greyhound remember [bANNED TEXT] he bred it a romany travellar called butch price took two pups.

If I remember rightly the Price's had some decent dogs over the years.

My first proper lurcher out of the exchange and mart in the 70s and remember older lads telling me he would be no good for hares as he had no deerhound in him lol.

I went to the Anglia Cup , think it was 2003 , at Hillboro , never seen so many hares as that , they couldn't get the dogs in slips quick enough , Sir Mark Presscott , ran his expensive purchase , Pop Concert , the dog got out run , ran into a wood and appeared with a roe in his jaws .................as Presscott took a long pull on a big cigar he looked at me and said " That dog doesn't know it yet but that was a very defining moment in his career !! ".

Yes the tea trailer sold coffee with a tot of brandy.I must have had six or seven.There were Pakistanis there with Barbour coats on and sandals.

No miss lurcher it was a bitch called gyp a mix of deerhound grey and collie this was in the 70s cye was a saluki bred dog.

I have some old coursing vids here forley cup calender ect from the 90's on there it shows some non saluki bred dogs running I will try get them on to a format I can post on here
