neil cooney 10,416
What lads are moaning about is decent digging borders are like hens teeth this has all came about because people class ratting or rabbiting dogs as working breeding them in to digging lines witch in turn dilutes what was once great line. I just hope the patterdale doesn't go the same way. Not a pop at any by the way just what I think. Good post Dave, your not that crazy. 2 Quote Link to post
Coursing mad 24 874
Or perhaps there are a few more good digging borders out there, but none of the owners can be arsed with all the hastle and shit comments that come their way as soon as they mention "BORDERS". Any topic about borders on this site usually ends up with someone slagging off someone else. well said Quote Link to post

Cleanspade 3,324
the problem with open discusion is that everyone chips in with the ten peneth . this just muddies the water and before long it runs off at a tangent. the issue is folk using the title (working) as a selling point for dogs that often are not up to it. if i was looking for a border terrier for the job of bolting foxes. i would look for the title (working) before the word border. i wouldnt expect dogs bred to rat and rabbit to be sold under this title. i would expect dogs bred for the job below ground. i agree that all dogs that work are working dogs but the tasks are so different that they need a different type of animal to work them. whats up with ratting border. ... or versitile border terrier pups. sporting border terrier pups. this apears in all breeds not just borders. there are terriers that work and there are working terriers . if you need to sell pups sell them but dont put them out as something they are not and never will be . trades discription act will have your balls. good luck in the coming season folks . rat rabbit or fox. 3 Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,492
Its the language people use that changes attitudes, and the language we are hearing now on this thread and in magazines and books is that dogs that were created to go to ground that will not go to ground can still be seen has working dogs. It doesnt matter if you enjoy bushing or ratting. You will find out at some point that the dog you have will or will not go to ground and stay. If it does not then it can and should be known as a failed terrier ,and if its kept alive it should be seen to by the vet so its blood isnt spread..Anne Roslin Williams had it right I think in her Border terrier book when she admits to being mostly interested in showing but says how she falls out of love with a dog that wont go to ground. I love ratting and I love to see terriers especially in numbers hunting and bushing, but a terrier that will not or cannot find in his heart to go to ground is like a black hole to the breed. Failed terriers are being bred to failed terriers and marketed as from working lines, which as I said in an earlier post is why the true Border terrier that can and wants to do the job he was made for is now sadly a very rare breed. I can say this not because I have long experience in working Borders but because I had a lot of years trying to buy a working Border. Having eventually been lucky with a Border I realised there is no other terrier like it. Totally unique, long may it continue.... Quote Link to post
