Sadie 55
Thought the name 'terrier' came from earth dog. 1 Quote Link to post
stripes 401
And your point is? you have a earthdog and one day you decide to go and have some craic working rats instead of earthwork with the same dog, he is still working no matter what he is doing. if a terrier nails 30 rats,,, believe you me he is working and earning his keep. 2 Quote Link to post
Sadie 55
If you had a border collie killing rats would it be a working sheepdog? 1 Quote Link to post

Sadie 55
so a ratting border should be called a 'working border' dropping the word terrier after it? Quote Link to post
stripes 401
If you had a border collie killing rats would it be a working sheepdog? Yes, if that is what the farmer wanted the collie to do and he is happy with his collie dog. Who are we to judge. Quote Link to post

little hedz 118
If a terrier is hunting and killing rats then it's working ... If a terrier is bushing out rabbits then it's working ... It's classed as a working dog ... There is a difference between that and a digging dog ........ Thats not working thats just being useful to its owner something any cur can do given the time and shown Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,485
Most dogs will kill rats I think, but the point is that the majority of Border terriers in this country and probably the world do not like the dark and the things that lurk there. If then we are going to call bushing/ratting dogs working terriers then the situation can only get worse for Borders and the rest. I think thats why people who have good little strains of proper working terriers are a bit protective of them and where they go to live. In the past I have enquired after lots of Border litters only to find after questioning about the parents that they were considered workers because they kill the odd rat,go out with the ferrets or even chase cats. Proper earth dogs or working terriers are in fact a rare breed and need to be treated accordingly.. Just my opinion. 3 Quote Link to post

Yes mr cooney, 35 years of working terriers in the ground and using terriers to there full ability gives me the right to have an opinion, who said anything about breeding,, so a guide dog assisting a blind person isnt working . If you want to keep your terriers for earth work only thats your choice, but believe it or not there is a lot more to terrriers than that,, that only comes from experience. fat man 4,741
I think it all goes back to the same old argument, the standard of terrier that the individual keeps. Some lads like a terrier for bushing or ratting, not my cup of tea but im not the 1 thats got to feed them, where as the same lads would not like to be out on a dig for a few hours in the rain and cold, everyone has there own standards. 2 Quote Link to post
