ands 544
Don't forget the muddler Mr Thomas, an old pattern that can be used as a dry, wet or streamer on any lines and can be fished any way. Almost impossible to fish a muddler wrong. What variations of the muddler can you tie? If i had 20 flies in the box, 18 would be muddler varients, awesome "flies" 1 Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Give me a three fly cast, on light line, on a spate river with a nice shallow run. Greenwells on the point, Black and Peacock on the 1st dropper and then a Partridge and Orange on the top dropper..... But we all like our own way i guess.... 1 Quote Link to post
Bobba_fett 117
I am fairly new to fly fishing and fishing in general. With your comment about it being hard to fish a muddler wrong I went out and bought a few. One large and a few mini minos. When is the fry hatch? And also an off topic question for anyone. Do people fish for trout this time of year? Is not why not? I live in Aberdeenshire and see the Dee is now open. I fished a whole trout season on couple rivers and a still water using only muddler variations, and to be honest my catch rate actually improved. Few folk thought I was mad but it's working and now it's nearly spawning time they seem to be fry daft so the action ain't over yet. Long live the muddler lol You will catch predatory trout all year mate, but the wild brownies do become more fry hungry towards the end of summer. With a muddler minnow you can use floating, sinking or anything in between lines. Can fish it upstream, downstream, up and across or any other way you want. Can fish it alone, or if fishing faster water with a bit of depth you can either tie a weighted nymph or sulimilar under it or use a sinking line to get it deeper. Like I said its almost impossible to fish t wrong. I am in no way an hour expert but if you need any advice or questions answered then please don't hesitate to ask or even drop me a pm Thanks alot, how about casting its across the a fast or slow part of the river, letting it go down and cross back to your side then real it back in jinking it up stream? Being new to all this I spend a lot of time wondering if im doing it right or just wasting my time. thanks for the advice. Quote Link to post
nakednutt 58
I like a muddler on a top dropper. Causes a good bit of disturbance. Where are you going to fish? Quote Link to post
Bobba_fett 117
I'm a keeper on an estate in Aberdeenshire, their is a tributary of the Dee that runs through it which I have permission to fish. I have only really caught very small brownies but I have seen a good few sea trout and salmon running it. Last year I had a big salmon jumping over my line. But no bites Quote Link to post
nakednutt 58
You wont go far with some spiders or some dries. Most of my fish on the river are got on nymphs. Red tags, pheasant tails that type of thing Quote Link to post
