chrismdd 787
Coming towards the end of the school holidays (weather is on the change) so we needed to make the most of it. So yesterday in the rain my seven year old and I walked down to the river and set two crayfish traps and on the way back collected some big slugs for a bit of chub fishing this morning. Got down the river at 9 this morning and fished for a couple of hours. Trying to give my lad more time learning to fish and do more of the actual fishing. Now at the stage where he can play a decent chub in a snaggy swim towards the landing net. Between us we caught six nice chub, my two were the smallest and his four were the largest with the best going 3 lb 10 oz: This little stream of a river is hardly ever fished and yet it is crammed full of nice chub, roach and dace, and all in beautiful surroundings. Then we went up and pulled in the two crayfish traps and had ten nice ones to take home: Back home gave them a quick purge and boil before having them for tea this evening: Chris 10 Quote Link to post

mattyg 1,862
Top class! Fresh water to purge the crays? Quote Link to post
chrismdd 787
Just purge then quickly in salted water, boil for five minutes, pull the tail sections off, snip down the back of the tails with a small pair of pointed scissors pull out the fleshy tail section and remove the single intestine. I know some purge them for 24 hours etc. but round here there are very few pollutants that get into the water system. Tail sections eaten straight away or put on kebab sticks and given a quick grill for added flavour. Some of the larger claws can also provide a little extra bit of meat. Chris 1 Quote Link to post
