neems 2,406
Does it have to be a small dog ? Retired greyhounds make brilliant pets ... They will happily sleep all day so are no problems but are also always ready for a walk ....... would they not rip the arms off an old fella if they seen a cat/squirrel/rat etc? Malt 379
Little Jack Russell would make a great little buddy. My scruffy little bitch is the most chilled out dog you could imagine. She'll happily sit on your lap all day but then again she's just as happy to lie in a quiet corner by herself. not constantly after attention like some dogs but a great little buddy to have.. Mister Gain 1,764
Brother had a greyhound years ago, excellent on the lead, no pulling good as gold. Although it did bring in a white rabbit one morning after my mother let it out for a s**t. Had YAH tattoo in one ear, but can't find anything on t'internet about it, would have been about 1970ish. Bosun11 537
Proof that good little un's come out of rescue centres... This is my daughter with her best canine friend Penny who, 15 years ago, my parents got from a rescue centre. They did want a smallish terrier type, liked the look of my old black dogs back then but like you Gnash, I knew a worker wouldn't be best suited and so they got the next best thing, a little terrier type, black too, that cost 'em £39.99 and was given a Penny change, hence the name... She has been the best little companion dog they could have wished for. Me Dad's 8 years dead now and that little dog has been both companion and guard to me Mam, but she's i'll now, both a stoke and heart attack and just done a big stint in hospital, it wasn't fair on old Penny, so she's come to live with us.... She's so good you'd never know she's there and best of all my daughter loves her to bits and I know the feeling is mutual.....
Born Hunter 17,751
The only thing that'd put me off suggesting a greyhound is they often carry niggling injuries into retirement whereas something less 'athletically honed' will be a bit more robust. Terriers are pretty bomb proof and make good companions around the house and in the field. JMO
Blackbriar 8,569
3 of ours are JRT and we also have a terrier cross (probably Border). Can't go far wrong with the terriers IMO - JRT, Border, Patt, Yorkie - so many to choose from. Small and manageable, terrific companions, good little watchdogs, walk for miles, tough little bu99ers and eat anything that sits still - what's not to like ? One small request - PLEASE give some serious thought to a rescue dog. Whatever you decide, good luck in your search, Gnash ! gnasher16 30,062
Went round the ol boys earlier armed with pics and video that a very decent member off here had sent me but unfortunately the dog wasnt for him, little bit too strong and robust but if i was on the lookout for a working terrier id certainly be on his ear, cracking dog and a nice gesture thankyou mate We did speak about a Greyhound but again just a little bit too much dog really he just wants something small and light.....we looked at a load of dogs on some of these rehoming websites so he could get an idea ....he,s got his eye on a few little Jack Russells so we,ll take it from there, dont know how long this sort of thing takes but will keep you,s posted......thanks for the input anyway Edited August 24, 2014 by gnasher16
