Centrefire Dilema

Recommended Posts

Well the FEO has just been round and granted me .223, 243 and either .17 or .22 Hornet but I'll only be able to use the Hornet on the Golf Course. Slightly disappointed but can understand why. The bottom line is I can only afford one rifle and with the majority of the fox issues being on the Golf Course I feel I have no other option than the Hornet.

What's the general consensus of the Hornet calibres and which is considered better .17 or traditional .22?

I would go for .17 hornet in cz as opposed to savage. Really flat shooting, fox to 200yds rabbits, corvids to 300yds. Easy to reload for aswell if you decide to go that route. My mate has one and it's a good little rifle, he shot a half inch group at 200yds with it last week.

Thanks lads, I will definately want to reload in all of my centrefire calibres!

In fact I've just finished building an outbuilding in my back garden specifically for that purpose: 20140812_194901_zps68e6ba2f.jpg

Taking that into account, would you all still agree that .17 is the better variant? Charlie Caller if I do go for a Hornet I'll have to tap into your reloading secrets because I've read that you are fond of the Hornet when it comes to reloading.

Decision seems strange. You can use .223 on all your shoots but you can't use hornet where it's safe to use .223???? Strange!

Anyway, I would agree .17 Hornet obvious choice unless you want to reload.

Sorry no, the largest centrefire I can use on the golf course is a Hornet

Try and buy 17 Hornet ammo, or worse still the reloading components today, let alone in a years time when

it's not the 'new game in town' anymore!

The 22 Hornet is bad enough for availability, the .223 is only marginally more powerful than the Hornet and

shoots the same bullets.

223 is available anywhere as are the 'bits', not sure I get the FEO or yourself on that one, you must have focused

your FAC application in the wrong direction, but it's too late now.

That may be the case in Devon but up here there is plenty of .17 ammo' cases etc. If the the op decides on the .17 hornet i can give you the data that is very successfull in a few .17s round here.
