trigger2 3,146
i was looking at a pile of used fire extinguishers today and was wondering could i put a whip and gauge on one to use it as a air cylinder to charge my pcp riffle? or is there some sort of reason why they couldnt be used? trigger2 3,146
safety???? in what way? would a fire extinguisher not hold the pressure needed? Quote Link to post
moxy 617
I'm assuming you mean the pressurised cylinder inside the extinguisher and not the whole thing Quote Link to post
trigger2 3,146
yeah use the whole thing. i didnt realize they had smaller pressure cylinders inside. is there not a few different types of extinguishers like dry powder ones, foam ones and water ones, the ones i saw today looked about 10litre so theres no way you could strip one apart clean it out add a whip and gauge and then hey presto you have a 10 litre 300 bar bottle to charge the gun. or have they all got those smaller tubes in them? it was just a thought as divers bottles are pricey just thought it might be a cheaper option. RossM 8,148
I was thinking the same about old air con gas bottles. Quote Link to post
moxy 617
The outside of the extinguisher is only there to act as a vessel for water / powder etc. and will have little or no pressure rating. Look at the above diagram. I don't know what pressure rating the co2 cylinder inside have. But I don't think it would be enough to charge a pcp. And certainly not a full fill. Can't fault your thinking though Quote Link to post
moxy 617
I was thinking the same about old air con gas bottles. Not something I have ever seen Ross. But the problem comes when your trying to get it filled to 232 plus Bar and it carries no safety rating. For it's intended purpose. Quote Link to post

Cedric 132
No one will fill it for you without the correct and in date safety certificate. 1 Quote Link to post
moxy 617
No one will fill it for you without the correct and in date safety certificate. just imagine the reaction you would get landing at the dive centre with a fire extinguisher. They wouldn't even look to see if had been recently serviced. Quote Link to post
