Steel Target Thickness?

Recommended Posts

One thing you could do is hinge the target.

The advantage of hinging is that some of the energy is absorbed moving the plate and thus less is transferred to the steel.

If you work with steel, it shouldn't be that difficult to get someone to weld something up - I would suggest you want a tube welded to the top of the plate and then a slightly smaller diameter tube as the apex of the frame with something welded either side of the tube when hung to stop horizontal movement, maybe a couple of scraps of steel.

I would have thought that a simple frame with the target hung from it should be all that's required - something like this but on a bigger scale with a fox sized target obviously due to the weight. Never tried it though with CF. It could be too powerful, you'd have to experiment.

The other advantage of something like this is the weight of the plate ensures it resets after every shot plus there's less chance of ricochet with a hinged target due to the fact that it "gives".

As for Hardox, take a look below. Some significant damage from .223 and .308 is straight through.

Although, .223 is stopped, I wouldn't have though the longetivity was that great with such deep surface damage from a single batch of shots.

There are some plate tests of different materials here. As SS Suggested, AR500 is pretty much immune to everything.:
