tomshep 41
I usually feed my dogs around 6 each night but when I head out with the lamp I will feed the whippet half it,s food around 5 then go out about 9 and feed the rest when I get back. A lad I hunt with doesn't feed his at all befor they go out but as I have other dogs in the kennels it,s hard to feed some and not another as they will kick up a fuss. I was just interested to no how other people feed their dogs with regards of time between feeding and working the lamp. Cheers Tom Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,070
Dogs can digest there food in 6-8 hours,,,I think there the quikests of all mammals ,,,socks will know better than me,,,just keep doing what your doing,,if it's all ok.. I feed mine at tea time ,,,and go lamping from midnight onwards genraly,,,if I was going lamping at 6 pm in the middle of winter,,, I would give the dog a bit of food around lunch time... In the old days I did like most lads,,,and fed last thing at night,,,so if I were lamping they didn't get fed till I got back,,,,mostly they were ok,,,but I have seen a good few dogs my own including,,getting hypo..but you live and learn ,,,best if they have a digested meal inside them 4 Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
Yep canines have the fastest digestive system of all mammals so as TOMO says if you allow 6-8 hours after feeding there is no problem ... If your lamping at midnight give them their normal size meal around 6pm and they will be fine ......... Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,435
I feed mine at bed time regardless of if I'm going out or not. 1 Quote Link to post

slip lead 862
Dogs have got fast digestive systems, BUT to be safe, always allow 7 hours before work. Fella on here lost his dog because of a twisted gut. Quote Link to post
Dewclaw69 484
i now feed late at night and if lamping, after the dog's been out. that way he'll get the most out of the grub after a nights work. depending what time i'm going out , he might get a snack tea time. my house dog gets fed mornings Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
The ph acid in a dogs gut breaks meat and bones down in that time ... Dry food however can take up to 10 - 12 hours ......... 1 Quote Link to post
dansdogs 151
I feed all mine before work in the morning so I can be ready 2 lamp any night, even if it's not planed, eg if the mrs gives me shit, I grab a dog and go, lol atb Edited August 18, 2014 by Daniel Rees 2 Quote Link to post
stabba 10,745
Prefer to feed mine at night . that way they tend to settle through the night on a full belly. If lamping then they get a snack around tea time and their usual sized meal when they get back. 1 Quote Link to post
