The Edge

I decided to nip up the fields this evening while the mrs was on the couch. With the sun out, even though it was windy, I thought I'd give it a go. The past two occasions have been a fail. Arriving, I noticed that the general feel was more positive. It was warm, but with a gust that was the only issue. Jumped the gate, set up.

Feeling really confident at the moment with the 98, so took that. Stashed the slip in a hedge and took to the wooded area that has a few good spots. While on route, I noticed a few rabbits along a field edge that also had a large trailer the farmer had bails on from the previous days harvest... A perfect spot to set up and play the waiting game. Nothing. I did spook a few young un's which didn't help.

I headed into the woods as planned and took stock at the base of a tree I know my ranges from. An hour later, missed two pigeons and a sitter of a rabbit. Not good. Just one of those things. The wire of a fence saved one of the fury buggers with the classic ricochet sound.

I headed back, rather annoyed at my shooting than missing.

Back to the wagon in the field, I set up shop and waited. And waited. I noticed a few rabbits about 80 yards or so away and decided to wander up to see what the score was... I found a nice old tree stump, of which allowed me to take up a hft position using it as a kinda peg. Confident that anything out to 50 yards was dead on. As it was getting dark, I could see the flash of white tails jumping around, but I couldn't see any kill zones at all. My Menace is fabulous within light to semi dim conditions, but it was well out of its depth in this light. I thought that was it, but before I moved having kept still for 30 mins or so, I gave out a squeak sound, and noticed two heads pop up at what I found out was 48 yards. I couldn't see the rabbits details, but made out the base of the head, and squeezed off a shot. The rabbit dropped.

I came home and gave the bird the old I've lost my phone story. I was rather later than promised, but a good evening shooting. Bloody love the precision of the 98 when I'm shooting well along the edge of the stubble field :)

Nice one.
