doie1 22
I feel a big debate coming..... Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
The hmr is a great little pill for all round pest control. Ive just got rid of mine as I only had it for fox until I get a CF. Ive now swapped ot for a .22-250. Do miss it for the rabbits as its just so easy to shoot although I do get more satisfaction from the .22lr if im honest the hmr is a little to easy lol Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Oh really...this again! ,surely you've already read various info on this and don't need our input Quote Link to post
andyf 144
22 rimfire sub-sonic, is in my opinion (for what that's worth?) small pest control supreme. 17 hmr ok (if you like that sort of thing) ammo is too expensive, and of late questionable quality (only primer powder loaded, pushing the bullet 2" up the barrel, could spoil your day). I can see the attraction to 'former' airgunners as the hmr makes a 12 ft/lb airgun look like what it is! But for me (had a 17hmr and don't now, no use) no thanks, too noisy and nowhere near enough 'zip' to make it more useful than a 22rf. If you want/need more 'zip' get a centrefire. Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Well I still have my hmr and a 22lr s.auto and I have no reason to get rid of any of them....cracking rifle the hmr and experienced no problems whatsoever, what do you want it for species wise and what range etc etc could help. SportingShooter 0
Agree with celticcrusader, what are you classing as "pests"? Is that up to and including Foxes? Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Its not about our preferences lads, he's asked us if its up to the job...what job that is well he'll have to explain what his specific use will be. Let's not turn this in to a 22lr vs hmr as that's not what the question was 1 Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
As a starter gun I would advise you to go for a .22lr. It's more versatile than the hmr, very cheap to practice with, subsonic ammo is virtually silent and is easiy effective on rabbits at 100 yards. Downside is that it is prone to ricochets. You can squeeze more distance from a hmr up to a point. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
I personally only gained 30-40 yards using the hmr. I take the .22 out to 120 with subs. And if I do have a time when I need something smaller than the .22-250 for fox Ill either use the 12g or cci stingers at only 50 ft lb less than a hmr but has a heavier bullet. Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
I'm starting to think these posts are deliberate of an account that's made up just to start this debate all over again. Regardless what our preferences are unless the op is more specific he will not get an answer that's to his liking. Quote Link to post

Regardless what our preferences are unless the op is more specific he will not get an answer that's to his liking. Actually I don't think they are posted to wind anyone up. People new to these calibres are bound to ask the same questions. Just because you guys are familiar with 17hmr doesn't mean new guys joining and posting questions are, also not everyone wants to read old posts/threads, this is what forums are about...Not being a select clique of posters. If the question bores you don't reply to it. However the forum would soon dry up and become stale.. Cheers Quote Link to post
