God, this is depressing.........................

A couple of seperate surveys have shown that 30% of children have never climbed a tree, and nearly 50% would rather do their homework than play outside.!

40% say that they play outside less than they would like to, while a worrying 20% are outdoors for less than an hour a week ! ( Most of us probably walk our dogs for longer than that a day !)

Most parents won't even let the children camp out overnight in the garden.

What I find most sad about this, is that it seems to have now gone beyond parental paranoia - fears of accidents, paedophiles, abduction and what have you.

Now the children themselves are saying they have little or no interest in sport or outdoor activities, claiming they are unsafe. Some children actually said they were 'frightened' to play outside, because the outside world is dangerous.

We used to play on the park all day long during holidays. we made bows and arrows, climbed trees, made 'dens' and dug holes. We even camped out on the park a couple of times. We'd go out at 8 or 9 am, and Mam would say ' Dinner's at 1 - don't be late !'. Back we'd go for a quick lunch, then off again for the rest of the day - and I'm a city boy !!

I'm not saying every kid should live a 'Swallows and Amazons' life - style, but not only are they missing out on physical exercise and activity ( and we all know where that's leading !), but also vital social skills, like communication and co - operation.

What's wrong with kids these days ?

It's the Nanny State bringing out daft statutes and

Health and Safety that puts parents in a no win situation

As well a schools

Youth Clubs

Scout movements

Girl guides ect ect

Are we really FREE ?

To go about our lives and bring up our Kids as we see fit ?

I don't think so ?

Max the state might have a few silly rules but they don't stop you letting your kids go fishing or doing any other activity .

The days are gone when as 8 or 9 year old you could wander and roam wherever you wanted and play till you got hungry and had to go home. I know i wouldn't turf my youngsters out like that anymore due to the dodgy adults that are lurking. Tbh that'd be my only fear. Early 70's when i was a nipper nonses were not heard of. Think alot of it nowadays is that kids need a constant eye kept on them whilst out because of dodgy characters.

Due to bad traffic yesterday grinding Portsmouth to a halt, my wife and I decided to stop at a pub with a ball-pool/soft play area rather than face God knows how long in traffic with two kids under six wanting their tea. However, when we found out we'd have to pay extra for the ball-pool we declined.

But...it gets worse...imagine my surprise when some other kids arrived...and had to put on day-glo-yellow hi-viz vests in order to go in.

Do you really reckon there weren't nonces about? I reckon there were just as many sickos then. They just seem more prevalent these days due to the internet. Don't you remember all those "Don't talk to strangers" talks?

Yes of course there was..........most noncing is done by people in trust anyway & often go's unreported.....definitely more paranoia about kids getting snatched off the street though.... Edited by Accip74

They might not have been prevalent in the media but child protection was the thing that was virtually unheard of which is why it went on but it wasn't reported as there was no real vigilance around it.

Operation Ewe Tree is dealing primarily with incidents that took place during the 70's and 80's as it was rife with no CRB checks or real justice/law or preventative/reporting support, it was just not reported.

It's all about awareness in every sense and aspect.

Child abduction and murder has shown a steady , sustained and continued decline over the last 30 years.............FACT

Lad who works with me has a 7 year old lad he takes him swimming once a week

The school started taking him after the second lesson they told him he couldn't go any more

When my mate asked the school why he was told that his lad could swim 20 meters without stopping

So they don't need to waste time teaching him anymore now while his mates go swimming he has to stay at

School and read

No wonder kids can't be bothered

When we where kids remember the cat banging on about not playing with matches

That was about it now it's sun cream wash your hands and £90 play station games

Not far from me there's a peace of common with about 20 cherry trees and 5 pear trees they get loaded with fruit

Every time I have been I have never once seen a kid up them trees

Schools should teach kids how to make go carts out of old bits of wood

Not teach them out Ramadan
