Dam Or Sire What Has More Influence On Pups ?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what has more of an influence on the pups out come ie height, build all the rest of it weather it would be the dog or the bitch ? I am thinking in terms of a 1st x bull greyhound

If the sire was the greyhound would the pups come out taller ??

If anyone has bred this way round I would like to see pics of the outcome

Thanks in advance

As bunnys says, it's the common ancestry ie quality line breeding which makes an individual more likely to be prepotent and therefore more likely to pass on its qualities. The problem is that so many

Equal mixture. But the Mentality can be swayed by the dam. Remember the pups spend the first six weeks with the dam and get a helluva lot of traits from her. ie if the bitch is really aggressive there

Is it not the case that the female chromosone plays a more significant influence on breeding than the male?.Whether thats the scientific case or not ive found that the traits from the dam are paramoun

well on paper the pups will get 4/8 genes from each parent . But I think having the dam none running dog, seems throw more to the pups . my young dog dam a gsd bitch , and all pups carry strong feature to a gsd, but temps are in some pups gone to the greyhound I think. my dog loves people+dogs , shows none of the gsd temp regards guarding or dog aggressive as gsd's can be with other dogs sometimes and deff guard, he soft lol but very full on in the field prob like what greyhound would be . and some gsdx grey bred from a running dog dam seem to come out more racy from what ive seen pics of in the past. But as said on paper it should make no differnce really

What about gran sire + gran dam so on it can play its part like humans parents can be small but some children turn out 6 ft odd funny old game atvb

yeh fair point , mom+ dad were average size dad 5ft 9 1/2 in mom 5ft 5in , me and my 1 brother knocking 6ft and other brother 6ft 2in , sisters same size as what mom was.But her dad was 6ft 2 in so it looks like the 3rd gen as come through with me+brothers, but my son smaller than me at 5ft 10in , feck knows how it works

As Bird has said above...the pups will be 50/50 in terms of the genes they can inherit from either parent but there are certain aspects which can only come from either the male or the female line.

For example, mitochondrial DNA will only be passed on by the dam (the mitochondrial DNA in the male sperm is, I think, contained within the tail and is solely used to give it the energy to reach the egg at which point it is no longer needed). However, I think I read somewhere that mitochondrial DNA doesn't effect either inherited behaviour or the outside/physical nature of the pups...don't quote me on that as I may be misremembering.

In humans I believe that some features are only passed on by the male...though for the life of me I can't remember which ones. :icon_redface:
