Do I Need To Train My Dog To Go To Ground It Will He Go When He's Ready ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've got a 13 month old seleham Russle dog, he is already after getting a fox when he was 10 months old at the end of a dig before I had bought him off the man, the line he is out of is over 100 years old, parents are serious digging dogs, anyway back to the topic the day I bought the dog the man said he would be very surprised if he doesn't work, but every time I show him a hole he sticks his head in, takes a sniff and walks away ? I brought him to an earth today, when I got there I could see the earth and it was raw with fresh clay looked like it was only kicked out recently but my terrier stuck his head in had a sniff and then walked away ?

This is my first digging terrier so..

Will he go to ground when he's ready or will I have to train him ?

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated :)

Cheers guys

With a name like fox-assasion i would imagine you already know the ins and outs of diging, but maybe not,if the dog wants it he will go himself,if not you cant train him.

I have 2 sealyham mate and both of them self entered and will not enter a earth if there's nothing in just get out with him as much as possible this season and he will come good

Yea the ins and outs with lurchers lol, as I said this is my first digging dog !

Instead of going out in digging mode, just go for walks, but put a collar on the dog when you do. Let him find things out for himself. If you go out with others be careful where you put him. You could easily ruin him at this young age..If you get a chance it would be useful to let him see another dog enter a hole, and then to hear it baying at quarry below ground. Do not let him off the tether but allow him to pull as far as the mouth of the hole..The smells and sounds will be enough to tell him all he needs to know, and that things are below ground that are good fun. Make sure the dog to ground is a baying dog, otherwise he may get the wrong message.
