Iv cut a decent stick to have a go at making one but realised its not as easy as I thought for a useless cack handed numpty such as myself.

Anyone got any tips?

Did I cut the stick at the wrong time of year?

How long should I leave it to season? Bark on or off?

I made one out of an old child's walking stick , very light and grew attached to it in the end. Until I decided to place it on top of the truck loading the hounds and that's the last I saw of it :cray: .

I also did a repair on this one using the same method with just an old boot, glue , stanely knife and a saw.

It's not too pretty but practical .

Always cut sticks in late autumn winter when all the sap has dropped down. Ash is good i think and looks nice with bark on..You should leave it to season for a year at least. Ive only made a couple of small whips with a Beagle type thong, but i usually cut a few sticks every year and use them the following year for walking sticks. Look up Peter Loxley Smith on youtube hand making hunting crops and whips etc.. atb J.
