chrismdd 787
Well its been a little while since I put up a post so here it is.Been out on a few trips out to various permissions and getting a good few rabbits here and there but nothing out of the ordinary to report then it was time for the family holiday to Cornwall staying on a cottage on a farm near Looe. We went down in my old discovery and whilst down there I noticed a fluid leak from the rear wheel, it wasn't brake fluid so just kept an eye on it over the week.Returned home last Saturday evening and then went up the road to my parents place to pick up the dog and my S410 that had been left there for 'safe keeping'. I left the old man a few full sets of filled magazines to have a plink but he never used them. Then I was asked the usual question 'When are you gong to sort out the rabbits up here rather than for everyone else?', so I loaded up the gun and walked round to the veggie patch by the road and looked out into our field and saw within the long grass over twenty rabbits (about half were within range) so took aim on the easiest one, fired and completely missed! The rabbits just stayed still so had another go and another miss. Tried ten shots at various rabbits and all clear misses so left the rabbits alone and went over to the bottom of the field to shoot a 'barn door', I couldn't even hit a six inch fence post at twenty yards, the old man swears he never touched the gun or knocked it So went home and the next day zeroed the S410 up in the back garden, it was shooting two foot to the left at 25 yards. Got it back on aim and checked a few things over and now seems spot on.Now I discovered that my old discovery was leaking diff oil from the hub so obviously a seal had gone. Picked up the parts and started stripping the axle and bearings to refit the new ones only to discover there were no old ones to take out and instead a previous owner had missed out one oil seal and two gaskets and had instead just silconed the whole lot up . Now I had all the parts to put in but no idea which way round the seals went so without the landy I couldn't get out to my newer permissions and so had to go local back up to our own patch of land.So last night I returned to the parent's vegetable patch and set up my chair, camo net and shooting sticks next to the road hedge, put a marker out at 25 yards before venturing in for a quick cuppa.Half an hour later I was back in the chair and waiting. Over the next two hours I fired eight shots and killed eight rabbits each one a perfect shot near the root of the ear and all dropped instantly with just the odd kick ranging from twenty to forty yards. Interestingly with dead rabbits lying around others would venture out and bound right up to them have a good sniff of the corpses and then just carry on feeding right next to them. At the far end of the field all through the session a dozen or more rabbits were always about to I'll have a go at them next week.Whilst up there the field is currently directly under a pigeon and crow flightline and with a stubble field next door it may be time to check it out as there were plenty of crows and pigeons feeding on it when I first arrived.Oh and today I took the stub axle and disk assembly over to the independent landy dealer who kindly put the oil seals in the correct way before I rebuilt the axle assembly this morning so that I can now venture further afield, but the moral is never dismiss areas that are closer to home. random 659
must be nice to be able to get out close to home, and if there's a few to go at then all the better, and that thing with rabbits carrying on like normal around freshly shot ones is something i've wondered about myself ,you'd think they'd sense danger but seem to just act as if nothing's amiss ,well more fool them!..
