The poem is about England, Jerusalem being a metaphor for heaven. I know that all to well and, it's a 'nice' poem but each and every time I hear the name Jerusalem in it, it removes me from 'my England' and simply smacks of a war torn shithole, that has killed as many people as the great wars and never looks worth a drop of blood being spilled for it...! Nah, heaven for me it ain't..!!!! It also seems like we are being force fed it, like someone wants to sway a vote and that too sticks in my crop!

walshie 2,804
It's always grated on me that England doesn't have it's own anthem, but Jerusalem has always filled the void for me. It was our school anthem too.

Brigzy 1,298
God Save The King/Queen probably WAS the English National Anthem in the 1700's. It certainly was NOT supported by the Scots when it included the verse; Lord, grant that Marshal Wade May by thy mighty aid Victory bring May he sedition hush And like a torrent rush Rebellious Scots to crush God Save The King. A Verse no longer recognised or sung.
