.17 Hmr Round Jammed

Been shooting my HMR now for over 2 and a half years. Had scope problems first and then my rifle eventually settled down on CCI 20 Grain. It likes them, and I have never had a problem at all with any round. Quite recently I have been having problems getting hold of CCI so after ringing around and talking to a few RFD's I was talked into trying the Winchester 20 Grain. So far out of the first 25 rounds I have two rounds with a tiny split in the neck after firing. I thought to myself, O.K, keep an eye on it and see if I have any more.

I was out today and chambered a Winchester, took aim on a crow and pressed the trigger. The only sound I heard was a click. It was, as if, a round hadn't been chambered. I gave it 20-30 seconds and carefully opened the bolt. There was a tiny amount of smoke coming from the spent round and my worst fears were confirmed. The round had not left the barrel and it has travelled approximatey 2 inches from the chamber.

 

I need some help / advice or, is there anyone who can remove the round.

If you have a cleaning rod just gently tap it out

 

It doesnt matter what brand Hmr Its always the same problem a crack in the neck of the case take the rest back to the supplier

I don't have a cleaning rod but I think I will have to purchase one. It was so strange though. Not even a little noise. Its as if there was very little if any powder in the round. I have lost all faith in these Winchesters now.

 

Probably a good idea to buy one anyway should this occur again. Ruined my day. Glad I took the shotgun as well.

Ive just got rid of my hmr but always kept a rod in the hmr bag. It never happened to me but after hearing stories I took precautions

I've only used 20grain when I first bought my hmr about 2012 since then its always been 17grain...shame you've now joined the bad batch club mate.

And another one added to the list of hmr horror stories reading just last week on SD about a chap who is trying to get health and safety involved after the rear part of the bolt and part of the stock were blown off by just this problem, and a subsequent round being fired, what a pile of crap

I started a similar thread on this a couple of weeks ago. HMR - too loud, too expensive and now too dangerous. Get rid.

Well tbh all rimfires have ammo problems and many have yet experienced such so speak for yourself skullhooker but I love mine, that said I do believe something needs to be addressed.

Thanks for your replies. I have to be honest, this is the first problem I have had, and it's only since a change of ammo form CCI to Winchester.

Dan: You're right, I should have listened to my head and bought one a while back. Oh well, a trip down Sports Man Gun centre to see what they have.

 

The trouble is, I do like my HMR. So, I will keep hold of it and see how things go

 

Charlie: You were saying you seen it last week on SD, about a guy who is trying to get Health and Safety involved. What happened there. Did he chamber another round? Sorry to sound stupid but, what is SD?

Even though the round is approx 2" from the chamber, I have been advised to tap it all the way through the barrel??? This advice is from a RFD. Any suggestions.. Has anyone else tapped it back toward the chamber end without any consequences??

See what you mean... Open to a lot of interpretation that one. I know when I fire a round, if I am not entirely sure that round has left the barrel I always check before chambering another. I think that should be the case no matter what the calibre. However, it cannot be denied, it seems to be more of a problem with rimfire.

 

Going to get a rod on Friday to get that round out of my barrel. Gonna kill two birds with one stone and have a look at the Savage Axis .22-250 stainless. It's up for £385 brand new and I am on a very tight budget and all the reviews I have seen have been pretty good for a budget rifle. It's for fox control and as long as it shoots I am happy. The reviews have shown it to be a pretty accurate rifle, interchangeable barrel. Free floating, four round magazine and so on. Gun Mart gave it a good review as well. It will do me.....

Always go chamber to muzzle pal it may only be 2 inch but it's in the right direction walshy
