Tomhill131 25
Is anyone else on here concerned about our future generation ? The lack of knowledge of where good comes from is actually quite scary a student at the school I work at actually asked which animal beef came from and it's becoming a frequently asked question as they just assume it comes straight from the shop, which is why my daughter helps with working the dog so she will understand . Lid 194
Many don't where fruit and veg comes from as well as meat. Pretty easy to correct though with the right exposure in schools.
neil cooney 10,416
It's a good question. Kids nowadays will gladly sit at a computer pressing buttons and blowing human images on a screen to pieces. Show them a slice of lambs liver and ask them do they want some, they'll nearly faint. Even kids living in the country nowadays don't know where milk or eggs come from. On the fishing forum on here a lad showed some kids enjoying a successful days fishing. I commented that I hope they helped with the cleaning and cooking. Someone commented "FFS they're only kids". Seems even those who hunt (or say they do )are getting far removed from where our food comes from. My daughter caught and killed her first trout at 6. Soon after she was cleaning and cooking them. Now when she get's one she wont even share it with me. LOL.

Rake aboot 4,936
I once had a great night after my son brought a few friends back after the pub. About 6 of them, Both boys and girls, sat there talking shite,, so I threw in a question. "Can ducks fly?" I sat for over an hour listening to what was both the funniest and also scariest utter bullshit I have ever heard Example " Naw,, it`s swans that cannae fly and ducks are just wee swans int they ?" utterly amazing. My lad knew, but just let them all hang themselves

Foxi_Roxi 21
I think it is scary that children just dont know any more!! I am only 23, and some of my friends naievity is ridiculous! I dont have any friends my ages as such that are into the whole shooting/hunting thing, and trying to get them to eat game is a chore! i dont bother because its wasted on them! They cant seem to get over the fact theyre eating a fluffy bunny, and it really riles me as they dont seem to know or care some of the awful conditions commercially farmed meat is kept in. I am slowly trying to be more self sufficent, and grow my own veg etc. What meat i buy i try and get from a reputable butcher rather than a mass supermarket.
Richardhomer 7
I help out at my kids school. They do out door learning called "forest school" if you Google it you will find its a growing thing happening in more and more schools now. We take a class of young kids out to a local wooed area that we have the use of. We have a camp fire , the kids can go bug hunting. Do digging. Build dens. The older ones can do whittling too. Sometime we will cook on the fire. It's all child led play. They learn a little about the out doors. They learn about themselves and each other. That they have to help each other to get what they want to achieve. It's the sort of out door play that every child use to do in there our free time. But now most no longer do it. We take kids from the age of five up to eleven. So they start early. And learn as they go. I believe that's it's really a worth while things. But some of the teachers at the school believe it's a waste of time, if it dose not involve a pen and paper. Hence the ones that believe in it need outside help. So they get me! It's strange, but it's only the teachers that like the out doors that believe it's worthwhile.
neil cooney 10,416
I laughed at a show on the telly one night when some people were in a river swimming. They called it "Wild Swimming". I said to my daughter "we used to call that Swimming." I seen last week in a local paper that a Councillor was trying to stop local kids swimming in an old quarry. These kids were getting fresh air and exercise in the outdoors and not in the sterile environment of the local pool (which is 10 miles away) . I know accidents can happen but IMO if you wrap children up in cotton wool accidents are more likely to happen than to kids who were raised in the great outdoors. Was it last year in Britain where some schools banned Conkers because of the risk of injury ? There's a generation of wimps being raised, simple as that.
Foxi_Roxi 21
If and when I have children I will make sure they live an oustide life. Im only 23, and cant believe kids nowadays! when I was about 12 i ended up with a terrier cross that no one wanted. every weekend I would get up, get the dog and go out all day. We would walk along the canals, in the woods, build dens, try and fish. It was the happiest time of my life. I look at my brother who is whiter than white because he doesnt see the sun, has muscle wastage because he doesnt exercise, just sits and plays games on his computer. I cant believe my mum has let him become that. As an adult I am out all the time, dog walking, hunting, fishing, horse riding... and I will make sure my child is the same!

Im determined if and when I have children they'll be brought up to love the great outdoors!
