Ggib 370
good read in the cmw this week altough in my opinion a bolting mid winter fox with lurcher in hot pursuit is much better than hitting the net. anyway, it reminded me of late dec 2011, me and my mate were out checking holes when we were on a farm where the earth runs under a concrete road when my we border bitch at the time dropped in and within secs was baying away. i said lets just sit in the jeep to let her settle before getting a mark, 20 mins later i said lets see where she is. i got a mark on her at 7ft under the middle of the road in line with a huge oak tree and i just thought holy feck this is going to be tough. so we both agreed to sit back a while and exactly 45 mins later as i opened the door to get out i seen a ginger head poke out and then out flies a huge dog fox in full winter plumage. it was an awesome sight when we both said at the same time, wish da feck we had a lurcher lol as he took off like a missile over the field. 2 secs later the we bitch was out after him with only a few nicks for her troubles. but your article reminded me of that day, we bolted another not long after from a different earth no nets, guns or lurchers with us. just one of them days. marshman 7,758
When I was a young teenager I had a little jack russell called Buck , lol I named him after the wolf in call of the wild. Anyway a mate that had an oversized pat and me was having a mooch about we tried the rubbish dump and nothing going on there so we went to the local industrial estate . we got were we wasn't probably supposed to be and climbed a chain link fence into a factory. Running in between two big warehouses was a manky ditch full of oil and god know what other chemicals. Along the bank was a little two holer my little dog goes straight in and starts to bay , after five minutes I put my head down one of the holes to have a listen when from out of the darkness looking at me I saw old foxy looking at back at me , the trouble for him he had Buck chewing on he's arse and was ready to bolt but I had stuck my big head down the hole and stopped him. I quickly got back and waited above the hole on the bank an sure enough out he comes with my little dog trying desperately hanging on. Just as he comes by I grab him by the brush and hold him aloft . At that very moment the side if the bank gives way for me to slide right into the rotten ditch with fox and terrier rucking on my chest as I hit the water ?. I went right in head under the lot , I climbed out I looked around to see the fox swimming to the other side of the ditch climb up the bank and just before he trotted of the fox looked back give me a dirty look and of he went . A lesson learned no nets no lurcher and no fox ! Good days though I wish I had that little jack now . Sorry for the long post but it's been slow on here and I thought I chip in . 4 Quote Link to post
Accip74 7,112
When I was about 18, me & my mate were out on the wkend as usual looking for a dig........we'd been out all morning & no result, so decided to check out a little wood where we'd had a dig in the past......anyway, the usual spot didn't hold, so we walked back through the middle of the wood & found a little shallow rabbit bury, that had been freshly dug out, probably the night before. I had two terriers with me that both gave a strong mark......we were on! We were well chuffed, this was gonna be a nice easy result & then home.......I tied up the two terriers so we could have a quick look round & see what needed to be covered.....as I walked over the shallow bury, my foot went through (maybe a few inches) into one of the tubes.........but something didn't feel right, it felt springy under foot, I stood back & looked down, only to see some large quarry looking back at me, which I'd obviously just literally stepped on, I called over to mate & told him the quarry was here looking at me, he just laughed & said 'yeh, right'o'.......with that, it was out, ambling off through the wood, with me, my mate & two terriers just stood watching it disappear....... 4 Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
Your right Marshman , it has been slow of recent on here. I mentioned this one before but what the hell. There was four of us out one day when we pulled up at a gate way where there was an earth just one small field in of the road. I said I'd run across and if the terrier looked keen I'd give the signal to bring in the 2 lurchers. I ran across with a little black bitch called Skip running loose beside me. In a second she was to ground and had 3 foxes bolted. I ran back and the lads said to me "empty ?" "It is now" I replied. 3 Quote Link to post

You were just being greedy Neil, lol do you remember the day many years ago when yourself, your da and myself were out and Todd was running lose and put a rabbit out and ran it to ground as we thought as dog was to ground in a small earth when we found him.Your Da and me said we would dig the dog out and you decided that you were having no part in diging out a rabbit so of you went to check another earth just down the hedge. We dug Todd out and were just about finished as you arrived back and with a big smerk asked did we get the rabbit but the look on your face was priceless when you seen Todd ragging a good sized fox, your Da and myself laughed our bollox of for the rest of the day. 3 Quote Link to post

johnrussell84 2,832
I have an older mate was very old fashioned stuck to the old knocker box for a while when the bellmans came as that's what he knew. Anyhows his wee russell can cover terrain in no time so he agreed to put my bellman on him and id put the knocker box collar on a wee bitch that hunts jus infront. We were on his permission on a huge gorse bank when the wee bitch appears I took her over to an old rabbit bank just off the gorse she dropped straight in ticking away. As I reached for my fone he rung me saying tie the bitch and bring the spade that dogs at ground I says ur funny so is she. We were about 100 yards apart. He walked over for bellman box after 10 mins to get a mark as I was digging he smirked will u be long with that spade watching him cross back over the field tryin to work the box was a picture the hands goin side to side with the numbers dropping could hear Him mutter silly technology as he got back his fox bolted he got back to me as I was breaking thru lifted the bitch fox sprung straight into the net went bundling down the hill I looked up at him he says am too old to be chasing that. Shouting at me as I fell giving chase grab the thing after all the commotion he jus smirked again an says funny old morning those bellmans are quite good actually an as we got to the car says u should watch falling that close to a fox old shite but comical mornin 1 Quote Link to post
