barnslyben 74
school canteen bins was good feeding just trow dog into bin an trail it back out when it was full. an fish on a Friday Me Mam worked as a school dinner lady for years and my dogs looked bloody good on it... As for a good complete, the best i've found is the stuff that Lidl sells, called Orlando and though I do use mince about 4/5 days a week, it's the nearest to feeding barf i've ever found... I can second that I use it with added extras but my dogs look great on it loads of energy. BB

Dewclaw69 484
starting to get some results now ! still feeding the skinners working 23 but managed to get a bag of chicken carcasses from the local butcher. now feeding a slightly smaller amount of dry food and adding a chicken carcass . even after 4 days i can see the difference. his coat's starting to shine, he has way more energy and he's starting to look right. his stools have also firmed right up. well pleased. i am looking into feeding barf but need to make sure i can do it right before i do. thanks for all the replies. rob
redcharge 378
I like Eukanuba when you work out the amount you have to feed compared to Gain etc there's not a great difference in price
Cleanspade 3,323
ive a big family so lots of kitchen scraps. and orlando my dogs are in fine niick and are generally long lived. my family have allways fed the dogs on table scraps. for generations. most live till late teens and touch wood very few fet bills then again the kids are fed like feckin fighting cocks here
Foxi_Roxi 21
Its all down to what you can spend. There are good foods for every budget. I like Eden dog food for if I ever went back to dry food but it is pricey. obviously you dont feed as much because its pure protein, and not full of fillers. I like Arden Grange as a good dry but again a bit pricey. If you wanted a lower budget food but still good Wainwrights grain free by pets at home is brilliant.

THELURCHERANDLONGDOG 91
For several years I fed my dogs gain 28 all year round with added raw through the working season such as chicken carcasses, beef off cuts + fat and lamb scraps / bones etc but all this butchers waste was always second to fresh game , the old boys used to say you need to feed em fast and that has done me well over the years , I do not skin or gut rabbits or hares and those that know me and more so my dogs know they "my dogs" don't suffer because of it. Most dogs that know their way round a whole rabbit will start with the guts and finish with the eyes , some folk will be spewing at the thought of it because of the worm count in rabbits but eating the entire gut is very nutritious and with the bone and pelt working its way round it naturally clears the majority of worms and backed up with a regular worming program should ensure good health. I have now changed my dry food base to odds on 27 , initially by accident because the local track was out of gain 28 but after a couple of weeks I noticed each of my dogs had packed on several pounds of extra weight, my dogs are around 25-26" and they would have 2 pints a day each of gain and now only need 1 1/2 pints of odds on to achieve the same weight gain and their coats seem better too. One thing I will say about the leading brands of greyhound racing formulas ie gain , odds on redmills and Australian formula is that the owners have spent millions advancing the technology behind feeding a racing greyhound which is far far beyond the limits of some of the brand names that I have heard mentioned on this thread , another old saying the old folk would say " a fool and his money " ! ! ! ! ! !
terryd 8,519
Would the gain 28 be suitable for pup of 5 months ? there puppy and sapling is bit on the pricey side
bobkizzyhugo 40
I feed mine butchers scraps whole rabbits table scraps and a cheap biscuit like dr johns if I run out. They don't get fed some days somedays they may just get a marrow bone each some days just biscuits I throw them the odd carrot or apple I think it's important to feed a dog a variety of food. The same food every day can't be good in my eyes. have kept them red mills skinners etc but think they are in better condition now than then. Never even seen a worm come outa any of my adult dogs and the only get wormed once a year after 12 months old.
THELURCHERANDLONGDOG 91
Would the gain 28 be suitable for pup of 5 months ? there puppy and sapling is bit on the pricey side yes it will be absolutely fine mate just keep it well topped with any other extras like raw meats , tinned or fresh fish etc .Puppy and sapling is a great starter but at twice the price of 28 I don't think its really worth the extra.

tong po 129
to high a protein content can cause joint and growth spurt problems in pups and young dogs it needs to be a well balanced mid protein diet I had this problem with a whippet pup on good quality pup food,it started to role over on the front paws, was advised to use a lower protein adult food and within 7 to 8 days the front legs had completely straitened out
