Astanley 11,568
As an old fashioned traditionalist I,v always found a basic boxing knowledge ( how to punch correctly ) and maybe a bit of the ancient and venerated discipline of But~Kan ~Doo , will usually stand you in good stead in the average bar room disagreement , obviously against more gifted and better trained opponents the hedgehog position followed by a loud and high pitched call for help will come in handy .

C556 351
I don't think they normally do any hard sparring in Krav Maga (as many of the techniques would be lethal), which would probably be it's main weakness when compared with other martial arts like boxing, Muay Thai, Jujutsu etc. You can pad up and train hard ......... I dunno if it's generally the case but the Krav Maga club I was interested in joining never done any hard sparring. There's a big difference between doing set up attack-defend movements and sparring with an opponent who's moving around and trying to hit you back hard.

dare 1,103
You old boys still get into fights? Can't tell ya the last time I had a fight. f***ing hate most people but some reason people seem to like me lol. To be honest any time I've had a fight I've got like a 6th sense and knew it was gonna happen anyway. Most the people who I want to give a slap are mates who take the piss because they know their mates. Too friendly with em then when wound myself enough and let em know the score they say that I'm over the top.

gnasher16 30,129
Without wishing to offend anyone whos into all this malarky its always astonished me just how gullible some folk are when it actually comes to having a tear up !.....I always associated all that hong kong fuey shit with impressionable youngsters with pictures of Bruce Lee on their bedroom walls or grown adults going through a mid life crisis......i mean whats it all about ? once you have read all the books and been taught all the moves by your shaven head monk double dan gandmaster............. what next ?.....fair do,s i must admit it all looks very pretty and im sure it impresses some folk, but what is the goal ?.......Im not a big fan of mma since they threw so many rules in but i remember when it first got popular and there were hardly any rules i was pretty much at the end of my boxing career and i remember thinking this mma would of been a bit of me i think it would of suited my aggression and conditioning to a tee.....so i can totally understand the desire to become a well rounded and competetive mma fighter......but to go in for these individual " arts " for want of a better word, just to get a silly belt and talk bollocks about how Bruce Lee would of done Muhammed Ali .... I remember a yank fella called Evan Tanner an mma chap who inititally learned the basics of mma from a book !!.....He taught himself all the fancy moves then got together with his mates and would roll around the mat until they figured out what works and what doesnt.......he ended world champion.............and that is how simple it is,why you need some 75 year old, 4 and a half foot shaolin monk to tell you what works in a fight has always been beyond my logic.............go and pick on a few big lumps who look a bit handy and learn from experience......................unless of course its not actually having a fight you are interested but merely " having it in the back pocket if needed " in which case just carry a cricket bat in your car !
neems 2,406
I do jujitsu because it's fun mainly, even learning the traditional stuff is quite satisfying. Training with other arts is interesting because you get an idea of how styles compare and work against each other, which is very interesting like comparing very different styles of boxing for example. Sport mma's it's own art,but just getting involved in different arts as an interest is a hobby for a lot of people.

It's the same as anything in life one mans meat and all that .... Some people find boxing boring and very one dimensional and want to try something different that challenges them ... Some people love boxing and nothing else to them comes close ... Each to their own ... Krav Maga and some of the other things talked about on here have nothing to do with belts and are more about simple effective strikes and defence that work in everyday situations not all this diving around in the air high kicking and somersaulting over six foot guys that all looks very impressive but is useless in a tear up ... Its a good work out its something different its a new way to test yourself and if its what you enjoy doing then hey why not ......... I had some good times coaching these lads to a win .......
gnasher16 30,129
I suppose its right each to their own...............ive just never really understood what these arts have got to do with " having a tear up ".......which conversations of this nature always end up about...Id like to think ive done enough over the years to feel confident in most exchanges within arms reach,im not really sure how many ways there are to skin a cat but i suppose if you enjoy it and it gets you exercising its all good

WILF 47,055
I think where these things like boxing and martial arts (especially martial arts) come into there own is when you see kids who may have disabilities start to get something from them. A lad I am friendly with runs a pretty big Jui Jitsu club near me and I have to say, he is a bit of a legend when it come to working with disabled kids, it literally brings a tear to your eye. My little lad was doing Jui Jitsu, he likes it but from what I have seen I would have to go with Gnasher on this one......I think it has it's place if say someone was thinking about attacking you with a knife (there's some pretty nifty moves for disarming them) but like anything if they really wanted to stab you then you'd be dead before you could get on stance. When my boy reaches 8 he will go to the local boxing gym as I just think it's more relevant. I think martial arts for girls is spot on, for them it could really help if attacked. Anyway, I have always sort of subscribed to the theory that a pick axe handle around the head enough times top trumps anything !! Lol lol
