young ferret jill doing very well in the field

Recommended Posts

this seasons ferreting was looking bleak untill a few weeks back i got a young polcat jill which was about 14 -15 weeks old.i had her out on sunday for her second time ferreting and she performed very well.out of the two warrens we ferreted she bolted three (the third came to the entrance of the hole and went back to ground )and i think she killed one by the looks of the amount of fur on her claws.it took a good 1 and a half hours for the first two to bolt due to the dogs making abit of noise and there was a down wind from behind us to the entrance of the warren ,but she kept with the job and bolted two.she then peeped out then went back on her own.we could hear more thumping so i gave it ten mins then checked with the locater,4ft down and they were still on the move, gave her another 10 and checked with the locater ,once again they were still on the move ,gave her another 10 and she came out claws full of fur.put her back in three times and no rabbit or thumping .do you think she killed down and moved on?we ferreted another small warren and after few sec a rabbit went to bolt but it saw me standing there at the hole and went back down.there was once again loads of thumping then the ferret came out further up the hedge.i decided to put her back in her box as it was now getting late.so im well chuffed with her.

do you prefere a ferret to stay with the rabbit or just move on?

here she is ..

She sounds like she is doing the job mate.

As she is young, she wont lie up too much, as time goes on, she might do it more, as she gains experince.

Great pic of her, in the full of it. :D

Good luck.

nice pic rew, I would have said on any warren, your expecting a lot from one ferret, even on small warrens we would put a min of 2 down, but more likely 4, gets the rabbits panicing a lot quicker and bolting, rather than just running round underground

would normally use two but the other polcat ferret is blind.anyone worked a blind ferret?i thought it was better not to but not to sure if ferrets use there eyes under ground anyway.the two warrens were only two holers but both holes were about 10yrds apart from each other.another question.the ground was pretty sandy and i was geting a mark at 5ft but the thumping only seemed to be right under my feet.Do you think the finder was out or the vibrations were traveling through the tunnels?i cant wait to have her out again and she now is starting to follow me when i call her.we were stopped by the rangers so i think we'll try some night time ferreting next time, anyone done this?

she certainly is mate but im sure we'll be able to sort something out ,i was thinking bells but these quickly get clumped up with soil but with the watchfull eyes of the rangers at night will more than likely have to be the way to ferret the warrens in this field.i would still like a black eyed white so next year we'll deffinatley have a white one.
