AKA-BRINDLE 879
Good finish from Billy Joe Saunders last night...Gipsy lad from fighting stock...personaly i couldnt care less how hes bred...good young boxer...on the verge of fighting for a world title...but wants to get it on with Eubank junior just to shut him up!...fair play to him should be a good'un!...Golovkin won in style in the 3rd...pure class!...still entertaining fights to be had in this day and age
gnasher16 30,025
If you read what i posted i've not compared Ali to Fury in any way...his hype and certainly not as a fighter!...i simply said their methods of selling themselves are the same...as was John.L.Sulivan before Ali...its nothing new...but as you are compareing the two i will just make a couple of points...was Clay selling out arenas before he was Champ?...No..the date for his fight with over the hill Archie moore was put back due to poor ticket sales...to give Clay more time to hype the fight...i agree that the Ali.Frazier,Foreman era was the best in Heavyweights since the last war...but what about just before he was champ?...back in 1960 when Cassius first came on the scene, the sport was,at best,on the threshold of being called off on account of lack of interest. There was no Jack Dempseys or joe louis's or Rocky marcianos,no charmistic fighters to interest press and fans alike...and so it was that Cassius stepped into this vacuum...and this was the era in which he first became Champ...i'd say that winning the heavy weight championship of the world is worth something in any era...and right now Tyson Fury is the best contender we have in this country for that title...all said and done its heavyweight boxing...not a f*****g popularity competition! I dont disagree with any of that............i just dont understand where Tyson Fury as a sportsman fits in ?...............Please dont terrify me with the assumption you think he has anything that even closely resembles Clay/Ali in terms of personal charisma or sporting interest ??.............Dont forget when Clay did it.....it hadnt been done before, certainly not to the level he took it.......Fury is like a cheap immitation of something he cant quite grasp in the first place,he,s not unique.... no matter how many times you use the words f**k shit c**t slag wank ..........................Muhammad Ali was a one off.
gnasher16 30,025
Lets be brutal about the Fury circus , most of the public , wether we agree or not , do not like/trust travellers , the Tyson camp are doing nothing to win the public over , if you don't have the public onside you don't sell out your fights , which has been shown with the Chisora fight , boxing is all about money , you win fights , you fill seats , you get the title fights , what promoter is going to bother enticing Fury over to the States , he isn't "Box Office " , you don't have to be the best to get the public behind you , remember Bruno ? The Fury camp need to go away and reinvent themselves , because at present , nobodys interested in them .so what about Billy Joe Saunders ?? as gnash said very well thought of in the boxing world and a traveller also different team behind he doesn't bang on about being a traveller also very talented and still can't get top billing . Is that because he's a traveller ? Without sounding like a broken record the big difference is from day 1 Billy Joe surrounded himself with PROVEN experienced boxing people.....Tyson Fury surrounded himself with family and friends.......you either act like a professional or you dont................personally i have nothing against travelling lads whatsoever ive had dealings with a few over the years and never had any problems, ive never been disrespected in any way by them.......but lets keep it real, the discipline, fitness, stability of mind it takes to live the fighters life is not for many people.............I speak to Billy Joe on pretty much a weekly basis the struggles he has because of being a traveller you wouldnt believe....friends even family he has had to distance himself from.....carefree attitude and sillyness that has to be controlled etc etc..............but again, that,s all part of living the fighters life and to do that you need to have folk around you who have lived that life and know what it involves.
zigzag dan 784
Gnash , he sounds a sensible lad who realises that being a traveller in boxing is not always a plus ! .Different sport , but we had Freddie Eastwood up here at Wolves , remember him , signed from Southend ? He " embraced " his traveller background round here , spent more time out trotting his horses whilst his game went down the pan , another case of " bad company " . gnasher16 30,025
Yes i do remember him mate lived on a site just off the a127,thought it was a good move for him at the time but seemed to just fade i dont know where he is now...............but this is the point im trying to make Billy is no more sensible than the next nutty gypsy kid ......but with proven and experienced boxing people who have been their and done it around him its common sense that he has a far better chance of success.....................why Furys people didnt try and get him in with Joe Gallagher or one of the other top trainers up there i dont know.......its like anything if you want success you stack the odds in your favour.

marshman 7,757
Beings as were talking travellers lol I always liked Henry Wharton . He fought at a time when that weight division had a lot of good men. Always conducted himself well and gave he's all when he fought.

TUFFTY 1,476
Billy joe saunders, comes from just down the road to me. Hes got the best people around him in Jimmy Tibbs. Who in my eyes is one of the best trainers this county has ever seen. TUFFTY
gnasher16 30,025
fury reminds me of jess willard even though he hasnt yet achieved the title, he gets in with one who means business hes getting hurt Back then fighters like Jess Willard and Primo Carnera were seen as freaks of nature that folk said had no place in a boxing ring......even in the ,s i remember sparring people like Jimmy Oyebola or Funso Banjo who also were seen as freaks,Oyebola must of been 6 ft 9 or 10 maybe....you could out muscle him and break him up on the inside IF you could get there....but getting past their jab was near impossible.....the difference between them and these lads like Fury/Price etc in todays times is these boys are much bigger naturally stronger men than the guys back then.....Oyebola was only around 16 stone Fury is near on 19 stone and carries that extra 3 stone in strength so that whether you can get past the jab or not they can still handle you on the inside.......The Klitchko,s are the perfect example of how size is spoiling heavyweight boxing,to think they have been some of the most dominant fighters in history yet are not particularly good boxers tells you where its at......likewise with Fury if he was 5 ft 9 instead of 6 ft 9 he probably wouldnt even be a pro boxer........in my opinion its a shame that human evolution rather than sporting evolution is playing such a big part in the sport.
neems 2,406
I reckon Vitali klitschko was the turning point,he was an all round good solid fighter, good technically, well conditioned, good chin etc It wasn't size alone that carried him imo.
gnasher16 30,025
Do you think he would have dominated the way he did in any other era than the one he fought in Neems ?.........Good boxer with a great chin and conditioning but lets not underestimate how weak the era and how poor the competition he faced was. bryson 562
off topic sorry but Gnash what do you think about billy joe and eubank i personally think billy joe would stop him but i seem to be the only one i love my boxing but im not a hardcore fanatic i new of billy joe but took no interest untill a few months back i watched a few of his interviews then a few of his fights he comes across as a real top lad with some realistic goals his team seems to have taken there time with him and theres no shite inbetween his last fight was against a good fighter with a good record behind him billy joe got the win and said after he wasnt on top form if thats the case i think he would be scary seeing him on top form do you think eubank will be his next opponent because he really wants to shut him up even though he doesnt need to or will he look else where ? Imo eubank jr isn't ready to fight billy joe yet, but it would be a fight id like to see happen after eubank has a few more fights under his belt to decent opponents! I like billy joe and if the fight happened now he'd win but when eubanks ready i think saunders will have his hands full... defo got some power behind him eubank and always in f***ing top shape and will be one to watch imo! Saying that i still think hes a wanker!

My view is pretty much the same as yours Bryson.....its so hard to gauge a fighter who has never taken a smack on the whiskers the Eubank kid puts me in mind of someone who has spent his life fighting in front of a mirror....but then from what ive heard he,s sparred some good fighters who think highly of him. Billys trainer is having to constantly reel him in regarding Eubank as he knows its a far bigger fight later on with a title on the line than it is now but as you say Billy would take the fight now and thats the mad gypsy thing in him i suppose its just as well his head is on right in as much as if Jimmy or Mark say jump he still asks how high......if both these boys can stay unbeaten we,re looking at another Benn/Eubank rivalry but it all comes back to the same thing and that is Eubank hasnt fought anyone yet we can all look impressive against an opponent we,ve just pulled out from a Polish hand car wash ....i still see that fight being at least a year away if both stay unbeaten.
