spready27 16
Guys, I've got a young springer who is about 10 months old, he is doing really well apart from the complete lack of interest of retrieving ANYTHING outside the house and garden??? In the house and garden he is brilliant, will retrieve everything and bring it back, but outside in the field or anywhere else just doesnt have any interest at all? is there a way i can deal with this? Casso 1,261
Is the pup given a treat for retrieving in the home and garden ?? The reason I ask this is because outside the home environment there are a world of distractions waiting for a pup which treats and fussing alone can't fulfil, Or has the pup been introduced to live game outside in which case would activate the pups prey making drive and also cause issue with interacting which is clearly low on the pups agenda If the pup is actively in hunt mode outside his mind is elsewhere Take him out very hungry , Less interaction in the home more action in the field , making training fun, don't worry about getting the perfect retrieve get the pup coming into your space for you to throw a second , keep him on the lead apart from this don't let him express energy in any other form, Dogs make associations with people places and things , the pup will now be experiencing drive he needs to be shown where and how to use it through you Best of luck Quote Link to post
Rikweller 14
Make it fun for him/her use the same dummy/ training ball you are using at home and the best thing you can do is go to a field that is free of game, find a field that's less likely to have rabbits running around to start with. They will soon get used to it and don't be too hard on him/her either they will pick up on your frustration Quote Link to post
