Joe1888 672
no expert on land rovers, from what ive read, everyone swears by the 200 tdi and also the 300.. old skool, nuts and bolts, easy to work on. Edited July 19, 2014 by Joe1888
dymented 2,220
the older ones are more reliable less to go wrong when your out
Chid 6,509
300tdi , best landrover engine imo but you wont beat a jap engine for reliability and performence
harddigging 42
i like the 300tdi but its a no brainer fore me if given the choice id go for the 2.8 isuzu
stabba 10,745
300tdi everytime
jack lee 137
i think you wont go far wrong with any of the mentioned engines, but the 2.8 is a good lump, ive just fitted a 3.1 isuzu to a defender, great power .but a bit thirtsy, compared to the 2.8,but the landys engine are good on fuel.but with the auto box.you could be lacking power to be honest with any of the 2.5 engines
Qbgrey 4,089
cheers gents, ive allways had isuzus, and was looking at the 3.1td in manual also.jack lee was it easyish to fit that lump in defender mate?
Chid 6,509
Steve parker do the conversion kits
Robie_n 10
I put a 200 disco in my 90 and iv got a 300 disco, I use the 90 offloading mostly never had any bother with it but the 300tdi disco is quieter and a little more efficient depends what you'll be using it for I spose
wilbur foxhound 480
Have you thought about a gas conversion kit
irishnut 297
your engine should be 3.9 efi, with approx 185 bhp when new a 300tdi will fit onto your autobox with a 300tdi bellhousing. but in comparision to jap engines the lr tdi engines are unrefined. and only 111bhp. m&d engineering do conversion plates. the mazda 3.5td v6 is a very nice conversion, but not too easily sourced. you need comparable bhp and torque figures if you ever want to enjoy driving the rr again
donnyc 1,203
300TDI decent lump and it will pull well enough..Ive had a few with the 2.8 isuzu conversions and the gearing is out and the three Ive had were not a patch on the 300tdi s Ive owned. Plenty 300s about

tomburras 2,730
Disco 200 TDI conversion is what I'd go for, that's what I did with mine. Iv seen decent engines from rotten disco,s sell for £250 and Steve parkers has all the conversion pipes etc very good parts too. Very happy with mine easy to work on and only needed mounts swapping from old engine and it fit straight in. Also with kenlowe fan you have lots of room to work on your engine too. Recently did timing belt and that wasn't too difficult and parts for them are very cheap too. Good mpg I run mine on bio diesel and 100% filtered waste veg oil during the summer and it loves it, runs very quiet and smooth on it as its more lubricant. Gonna do a twin tank set up on it at some point and hopefully save £££!
