TimS 49
Hi All, What a beautiful day! Far too hot to be out covered in camo, but I figured, what the heck. Better than getting rained on! Pack up the HW100 and SMS's the farmer. Called 101 and placed an Incident notice. Katie the Policewoman was lovely. I had visions of her in uniform! Got to the farm and the farmer was on site in the main, normally Corvid infested field fixing fences and driving his tractor about. Only crows were 100yds plus. Damn. Still, not to be disheartened, I camo'd up and took a peek behind one of the big containers in the farmyard. AHA! Mr Rook. 40yds with a nice litte resty fence 5yds from me to lean on. PERFICK methinks. Slowly I stalk up to the fence. Straw on the ground in front. Cool. Stand on the straw and my leg sinks up to the knee in Sheep Shit and Piss. F!!!K. What a crappy start. Its 28 degrees and Ive got a soggy leg covered in last weeks soggy shite. Great. Buy the time I extract my foot and sodden boot, Mr Rook is circling about cackling with laughter. So, not to be put off, I climb th fence and crawl to some rubble around 55yds from the main sheep feeder. Crows abound, but they are all directly in front of the feeding sheep. I wait. Mr Farmer stops his tractor and perches on the fence behind me to watch. Bugger. Better shoot something and not one of his sheep so he knows I'm good. Aim at Mr Rook in the open. Miss. WTF! Try again. Miss. Oh man. Its gonna be one of those days. 55yds is an easy shot off the bipod so im missing something. Must be wind downrange. Cant see it though as the grass is short. I hang on for another 25mins, but they are all hanging out with Mint Sauce. No chance of a shot so I give up and stalk to another spot. On the far edge of the field is a gate and beyond it a water bucket for the sheep. I slowly stalk up to the gate and hide behind the hedge. Mr Door is setting on a post by the water bucket. Rangefinder says 45yds. Brilliant! I get on my hands and knees and crawl to the gate in the shadows. HW100 gets rested on a rung in the gate and I put my eye to the scope. Slight breeze right to left. Aim. 1mildot over his heat and lungs. Breathe. Squeeze. Mr Jack Door somersaults backwards and hits the deck stone dead. 1 down. 5 seconds later another lands on the post. Ta very much. 2 down. This goes on for another 20 minutes until they started realising there were a lot of dead buddies on the floor and didnt land. Total result 7 Jackdaws. Annoyingly I could only find 6. By now I fancy my tea and a cold drink so I collect them all and head off home. About an hour later I come down to see what happening this evening. As I pull up there must have been 200 Corvids in the field! Holy Smokes methinks! I need a machine gun! I decide to enter via another field and stalk up. In my excitement I rattle the gate. The sky blackens and the sun is eclipsed. Bugger. Nothing but sheep. I lay-up and wait, but they have decided to call it a day and go to roost. In the distance I can see Jackdaws sitting on a fence post so I crawl around 100yds on hands and knees using the fence as cover. Get to 65yds and range it to be sure. Pop the bipod legs and take another jackdaw. All the others bugger off. Time to go for a walk. I mooch through two more fields and see nothing. By now its nearly 9pm and I want to check out a couple of Rabbit warrens for activity as I fancy a BBQ tomorrow. On the way to one of the Warrens I see a white tail dissapear in to the nettles not 15yds ahead of me! I creep forwards and find a new warren under the hedge! Guessing Mr Wabbit will be back for his supper I wander 20yds further on and take up a prone position behind some nettles. What this by the nettles - its Mr Door! I forgot I shot the 7th over here! Brill! Now Wait. Wait. Wait Tim, he'll come.... 20 minutes later out come a massive Rabbit. Mmmmm....BBQ is ON! I line up the HW100. Image is crystal clear and its head fills the scope. Crosshairs behind the eye. Gently now.....THWACK. Goes down without a twitch. I consider waiting for more, but this one is more than enough for my needs and Mother Nature doesnt shine on greedy, so the rest remain for another day. Tim 6 Quote Link to post
