shepp 2,285
marciano was better, but ray was a better boxer, if they met thered be 3 hits and one is the ambulance hitting top speed to save rays life i wish i could buy what you drink different weights different eras and could marciano catch him i doubt it he wouldnt need to all he had to do was fight on the defensive, no disrespect to ray, the mans a legend The only great fighter Marciano fought was Joe Louis and he was well past his best. Liston, Ali, Foreman,Frazier, Norton, Holmes and even Lenox Lewis would have beat Marciano.

He beat Archie moore who was also a great fighter.

I reckon today he could have started at super middle and beat the best there right the way up to heavyweight.

*The*Field*Marshall* 674
Walker Smith aka Sugar Ray Robinson, the greatest. The envy of every fighter who's laced on a pair of gloves, he had it All, speed, power, style, stamina, skills in abundance. Rocky Marciano was one heck of fighter too, if he was a 16st heavyweight, even 15 - I think he'd've wiped the floor with today's heavyweights, Klitschko'? - timber!

More relevant would be comparing Marciano with Ali, in which case Ali would box him into submission. marciano was better, but ray was a better boxer, if they met thered be 3 hits and one is the ambulance hitting top speed to save rays life That's irrelevant, different weights so no comparison. I couldn't.I see Ali comprehensively outboxing the short armed, slow footed Marciano and probably forcing a tko due to cuts. Edited July 18, 2014 by inan

If Marciano had been heavier he would just have been slower, he trained like a maniac to come in a ripped185/187lbs ,he was too short to carry more weight effectively. Brigzy 1,298
Us old guy's are often accused of living in the past, looking at the world through rose tinted glasses, etc. But with boxing, today's pretenders are a pale shadow of the glory days when there were many great contenders in every weight class. The heavies of the 60's and 70's, my era, were a sight to behold, as were the middles and welters, today there is maybe one or two in each weight group that stand out. A prime Marciano could never make light heavy, he was ripped down to his lowest weight whilst champion, anything below 182 would mean amputating a leg.

MickC 1,825
Charlie Burley against Sugar Ray Robinson would have been a fight, unfortunately Burley couldn't get the fight because he refused to take a dive . Due to Burleys honesty he never got to fight for a World Title which was a shame when you look at his record and all the HOF that he beat throughout his career. Back then it wasn't uncommon to fight three nights a week for the boxers then to make a living .Archie Moore said "Marciano beat me when I was an old man but Burley beat me when I was in my prime and he was the best fighter I ever fought". The book about Charlie a Burley is a good read and unbelievable how corrupt the boxing game was back then. One World Champion even bought the rights to manage Burley so he didn't have to fight him . Edit to say it was Archie Moore not Ezzard Charles . Edited July 18, 2014 by MickC
