PINNACLE 2,297
Very nice What glass did you use? Thanks. A Canon 70-300L Just been told it is more likely an Emperor rather than a Southern Hawker so ID would be welcome.
J Darcy 5,871
Its a male Emperor matey. They are great, I've raised a good few of these over the years as well as a pile of Southerns..... The darter is a mature male Black darter, well, it's a bit difficult to be 100% from that pic, but thats where my money would go ....

J Darcy 5,871
Tanks or ponds. I used to mix and match a bit, as i thought it was unfair to keep them in the tank for too long. Always trying to ensure they were returned into the garden pond before they emerge. Which they all did within a day of each other at the crack of dawn. A nice spectacle to witness, a true wonder of nature watching a dragonfly emerge.....
budharley 945
Can you tell from the larvae the different types ,is it luck they all emerge at the same time or can you stimulate a natural event to encourage it
J Darcy 5,871
I suppose some people can, but there's no way i can tell the actual species by larval form. It's simply too detailed for a layman like myself. It is not luck they all emerge within a day or so of each other, it's something called Evolution. The larvae are triggered by the time of year, i believe linked to both water temperature and the length of day. they clamber up on verticle stems and then emerge. It's a great thing to see...
