celticrusader 78
Well something certainly is a factor as ive hopped from federal, winchester, remington and hornady and have looked for cracks and neck damage but ive yet to experience any sort of thing, i thought that maybe certain rifles made had problematic effects with this calibre in the early days. But lets face it 22lr is as dodgy as it gets with all the problems that calibre offers and its still the oldest and the one most turn to in rimfire. Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
I'd report it to Hornday and draw their attention to this and other threads on the subject. Quote Link to post
rabbitraider 2
When I was last at my local RFD a chap was collecting a .17HMR and a brick of ammo courtesy of hornady because a round detonated and blew the bolt out the back 1 Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Flippen ek, this goes round as often as the picture of the fox shooting a rifle.Hornady (made by CCI together with many other branded HMR ammo) and everyone who has any remote connection with the manufacture of HMR ammo is well aware of this, and split cases, and every other issue the HMR (and many other calibres can throw up). Some magazine damage has been reported from this problem, but no barrel has ever blown up and nobody has ever had any injuries other than shock from my understanding. Feel free to post any pictures of blown up HMR barrels or stomach churning personal injuries caused by the HMR.HMR Semis were withdrawn throughout the world and serious warnings issued many years ago because of potential issues. This is not good, and not a matter to be taken lightly, but needs to be kept in perspective. As I have said many a time, perhaps it needs to be pinned, I am constantly amazed at the number of people who think this is something new. Edited July 16, 2014 by Deker Quote Link to post

It must be one of the most popular and most maligned calibre all in one! Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
I still think that quite easily goes to 22lr. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
I still think that quite easily goes to 22lr. Most popular and maligned? Tricky one, I do not know the ratio, but there are still substantially more .22lr out there than HMR, and certainly I have had more issues with .22lr ammo over the years than HMR. Can't remember ever having a split case on a .22lr though, but plenty with HMR, although it has never effected the shot, and I have never had a HMR bullet stuck in my barrel, but I have a .22lr. Hardly scientific and the luck of the draw perhaps! HMR.................... Most popular and maligned? Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I think the difference is that the .22LR is usually what you expect it to be, a lower powered round for small vermin usually to 100 yards. The HMR has been "bigged up" from it's inception which then has this anti-climax/panic effect when something goes wrong or it doesn't live up to expectations... In all the time I've been here, I don't think I've ever seen a more discussed and debated calibre than the HMR and by a hell of a long way! Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Yeh maybe but its instilled into us what the .22lr is and its pros and cons so we've just accepted it as its been around longer than all of us, true the hmr is the new boy on the scene and false marketing promises may have been made but how many people do you speak to who know nothing about shooting but still know of the .22lr...the same cannot be said of the hmr.
