Richardhomer 7
Hi all. I think my ferrets may have picked some fleas up. We have cats as well so they could have picked them up off the cats who are out all and go in the long grass , The ferrets are 10 weeks old. What sort of treatment can I use on them and there bedding ? We buy are cat flea treatment off the vet. I'm thinking this may be too strong to use on the small ferrets. So will one of the normal shop ones be ok ? I'm new to ferrets so any help will be great. Quote Link to post
The one 8,477
If your ten week old ferrets got fleas i would shampoo it make sure you get the lot ( i dont know if frontlines too strong for a kit ?) clean out all the hutch and spray it right into the corners . Also if your cats getting that close to the ferret to give it fleas it can give it cat flu which is fatal to ferret Quote Link to post

Don't know really Anyway. House cArpets have been treated now. Hutch has been cleaned out yesterday, will be doing it again tomorrow, and I shall get some flea shampoo for them and bath them tomorrow too. vanman1 411
Front line spray Mine have had ticks and fleas this year and i never have em,spoke to my vet and was told its a particular bad year for em. Its prescription only in this country ,however my vet looked at one of my ferrets free of charge so he could then grant the spray.I can now just go in and buy over the counter as its on repeat/file. You must thoroughly clean/spray hutches/run etc as well. You can use it on kits/adults and the cats its not cheap BUT IT WORKS!! Quote Link to post

Thanks for your reply , I'm a bit shocked really that front line is ok for ferrets. I would have had it down as being too strong. I shall look into getting some. I bathed them in with shampoo yesterday. Hutch and bedding all cleaned. I do know that both flea and mite are a big problem this year. Dogs , cats and chickens are all being hit bad. Some parts of the country are worse than others. It's all down to the warm winter that we had and the nice warm start to the stunner / that we have all bee/ enjoying. Our male cat has to be treated often as he has an allergic to flea bites and his stick goes shabby. So we always try to keep on top of . Them with him , but even know we have been treating him as normal all year. He has had a few small scabs , on him. I've had a outbreak of mite in the chicken pen earlier this year too. First one in four years for us. Got that under control quite quick. Going to keep a good eye on the ferrets to make sure that all fleas have been killed off. And I will sort out some front line from the vets for them too. Thanks for the help. Quote Link to post
iana 25
Good treatment for ticks is surgical spirit, my vet told me this and I used it once and it works fine. I gave my hob it and the ticks were off within 2 days. Quote Link to post

I think it will only get worse as more and more people are keeping chickens in there gardens so the breeding and sped of the mites will be easier. Warm summer and a warm winter have done the red mite the world of good too. 1 Quote Link to post
