North Esk..

Recommended Posts

A friend had taken a week on the North Esk, so managed a day yesterday with him.

A very bright day... water was very clear and quite low. Tried it with various patterns of micro tubes and Frances style flies. These accounted for a couple of small trout.

I did give it a good few hours and fished it properly with the double hander, but soon the temptation was to switch to the single hander and fish light for the smaller stuff..

Every fish on the single hander was caught on a size 8 medicine fly on point, nothing on what ever dropper i tried.

As soon as the sun dropped from the sky, I managed 24 sea trout and 2 brown trout.. Nothing over 3/4lb, the majority even smaller.

Never fished this beat before, but fair enjoyed it. Great facilities too..

Never saw anything moving, part from the the Finnock,... The water was boiling with them... They fought with every ounce of their weight... I stuck them all back obviously.

Got another session in August with him hopefully...

Beautiful place..

The lodge is impressive and what a location ive had some crakin nights in there ...a few I cant remember much about ...it has to be one of the best fly waters on the river as every bit of it holds fish and have seen big numbers coming off the tide ....and if theres been big water and it starts dropping the flats bellow the lodge can hold huge shoals of stacked up fish ...im hopefully home in the next few days will give you a bell for a cast ....you cant beat a bit of local knowledge

That pool in the bottom pic THE UPPER FLATS I had 5 salmon and a 5-6lb sea trout a mate had 3 salmon 1 of 15lb and another mate had 2 salmon all in the same evening on 2011 which was the best run of salmon I had seen for many years ...lost a fish there last year that I only saw a bit of its tail as it took the fly ...had it on for 27 minutes and it snapped me im sure it was around the 30lb mark ....The viaduct pool below the bridge is one of my most productive pools its not easy fished but once you crack it you can have some good takes right at the tail of the pool you have to cast square across and try and get your fly to the opposite bank up ward mend and let the current swing your fly right across the tail ...lost a very big fish in there early in the season ....never seen such a bow wave from a fish going for the fly ...took me right to the end of the backing and snapped me ....on average 18000 fish run through this beat...just been told im heading back from the Vietnam so will hopefully get into a few fish this week
