Get a squatter get as close as ya can let it get up slip the dog

I was being sarcastic mate. All this over-complication of starting off a lamping dog.   As the old saying goes "let the dog see the rabbit"

No rules what so ever when bringing on a pup as long as the youngster thinks its winning ....which is hard to explain on here ...make it fun and enjoyable when there young and build on there confindan

FFS DON'T run it with a 'pilot dog'! Take it out on it's own and take things easy with it. It doesn't need to see another dog catching or whatever, they aint called 'running dogs' for nothing.

Forget all the 'young dog advice', they don't need any of it

Was just gonna say no dog needs to see another dog catching, or trying to catch any quarry to get an idea of how to catch, more trouble than it's worth

Give the lad a break he's asking a genuine question

Hiya pal make sure your dog is old enough to go out on the lamp different breeds mature at different ages I find whippet terrier or greyhound terrier mature quicker than collie x. /. Deer x ex

Make sure the dog is fit so it's got the best chance of caching. sheep netting around the land is an advantage

Try fined rabbits that are sat right out then walking from the edge walk towards the rabbit with no slack on the slip (not chocking just firm) so the dog is right at your side looking forward try to get as close as u can with the lamp on it at all times at one point or an other the rabbit is going to make a brake for it and when the dog lunges forward slip it after a few times doing this the penny will start to drop and things will start to drop into place ie the dog will start looking down the beam

The biggest mistake some people make is giving a young dog to much in its first season

Keep the dog keen with just 3 or 4 runs a night try to finish on a kill

This works for me and I know it's easer said than done but go along these lines and you will pick your own way up in time

Good luck and happy hunting
