Been putting my pup through training for the coming season retrieve isn't going as well as hoped have got him on training lead issuing the recall whistle and he was coming back and giving dummy back first time same with recall , about a month ago decided to take him off training lead and recall was good , did some off lead retrieve training tonight and just ignored me same with recall he has just hit 10 months he's a saluki x grey , really want to get this sorted as will be joining a few blokes who's dogs are trained well this season and don't want to give the impression I haven't put the work in as I want him trained to a high standard. Sorry about the essay .

My bitch has never retrieved a dummy or a ball,

Has never been interested even as a pup.

Her recall has always been great though,so if she catches a rabbit I just called her and she came back.

First few I walked a few feet away from her and called her to me,it soon clicked

go back to the basics, start retrieve training in a alley way so if she wants to get away from you she has to go past you and you can intercept it from her.give plenty of praise and soon she will want to bring everything back to you.good luck.my saluki x retrieves perfect and she's 6 months.

Hi lads watched purdys progress and decided to get retrieve going again by getting him to bring it to me in his bed , seems to be going well did a few sessions yesterday and one so far today has been bringing sock dummy straight back and releasing upon dead command, cheers for your help and atb for the coming season!

He's hit 'teenager' stage. IMO don't do anything with him for a couple of weeks, only try to exersise him in places theres no other dogs. Go back to basics with the recall, leaving him hungry and feed him on the recall. he will soon snap out of it. Once you've got his recall bang on, do a few 'carries' with him on the lead. Avoid doing any of this in the sunshine. Good luck.

Thanks for replies he's not working ATM anyway guna wait till my work break for 6 weeks holiday , am just concentrating on recall and on short basic retrieve , he gets walked in the morning just round fields before the other dog walkers come on and I take him on my run with me at night when it cools right down , just a few miles for his fitness.

I wouldn't overdo it with dummies, socks etc. Things like labs that have retrieving hard wired into their DNA just adore carrying stuff about and will do it till the cows come home. But a saluki/grey is a different kettle of fish, and if you overdo it you run the risk of turning the dog off retrieving for good. If it's already sussed the basic idea I would concentrate on getting the recall 100%, then I think you'll find like roybo says, once he catches it'll be automatic just to bring it with him as he returns to you.
