Richard Warwick 50
i am currently reading a book called rabbiting man by Fred J. Taylor. he talks about using Ferret muzzles to stop his ferrets killing rabbits in the 1950's, has anyone heard of this method and does anyone still use it? Quote Link to post

And imaginge muzzling a ferret and theres something other than a rabbit down a hole how would it defend itself ?. Quote Link to post
norseman 424
I don't think Deben recommend muzzling ferrets for working though, I read somewhere that it was for biters only, (for when children are handling ect) Quote Link to post

rabbit demon 302
First ferret I got I was told to feed it saps and eggs off the guy who gave me it, there's still boys pulling their teeth for biting too, people only get common sense from bad experience or when they learn off somebody with better knowledge, most people do without question whatever their dad or an uncle taught them and carry on bad practices with their hunting animals, it's great the fact you can ask a question on this site and have guys who have been their and done it give good advice, as the one said their could be anything in the holes loads of of mink where I ferret and from what iv read even big rats can sometimes kill a ferret. There's a you tube video of a guy shooting bolted rabbits and his wee ferret has clearly got a muzzle on. 1 Quote Link to post

Seen plenty of ferrets, put to ground, wearing muzzles,...the practice was quite common... Never found muzzling ferrets, to have any beneficial effect at all on the rabbiting job.... The idea,..sounds a whole lot better than it is... Edited July 10, 2014 by Phil Lloyd 1 Quote Link to post

Don't know about mink but a mate had his ferret really beaten up by a polecat last year, I'd imagine a mink would do the same. 1 Quote Link to post
rabbit demon 302
Never came across one yet thankfully rich, mink would probably kill a ferret but least it would have a bit of a chance if not muzzled. 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Iremember reading an old school ferreting book as a lad, his analogy for muzzling ferrets was, "like butting your head into a dangerous criminal and threatening to kill him" they used to snap off the canine teeth in the old days, another damn cruel and stupid practice. 1 Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,217
No need for them here,,, But I have watched a few vids on YouTube ,,of ferreting in lanzerote,,and the Canary Islands ,,and they do it with string,,and I must say it was done in a very slick manner,,and the ferrets were very well handled ,as they didn't struggle ,,,I suppose using ferrets there in the rock holes,,and lava fissures ,,,it makes sence,,,and I assume no natural preditors ,,,although I'm sure there would be rats there Quote Link to post
