Another Year On

Well almost a year on and decided to take a break from the airgun as the freezer is full of rabbits. So as last year I took my seven year old down the road to rove for some chub freelining with black slugs. The banks as before are steep and overgrown so caution was needed on this unfished section of the river. In two hours roving we managed seven nice chub ranging from 2.5 lb up to 3.5 lb. Not bad for a river that in places you can jump over.

 

 

 

 

Also whilst tackling up at one point we looked up to see a hare just ten yards away, never seen one this close to home before. My lad gave chase with the landing net but this hare just showed a cleaned pair of heels.

that bit made me laugh, it reminds me of being a kid. a fishing trip wasnt just trying to catch fish lol i was always in fields by the canal trying to catch rabbits with the landing net lol never managed it tho! infact i didnt manage many fish back then either

I remember when I was a lad and was fishing down on the levels and I spied a squirrel that had crossed the bridge and was now feeding down on the other side of the river next to me. As I looked up it spied me and the only trees were now on my side of the river. It was like a scene from a comedy clip, we both looked at each other then both looked up towards the bridge one more look at each other as I grabbed the landing net and we both ran for the bridge. We were both level with each other and the squirrel obviously didn't want to take his chances on the small footbridge so decided to try to jump the last bit and landed smack in the river covered in duckweed. I reached down with the landing net which he grabbed hold of and then ran up the handle just before I dropped it and he ran to the trees.

 

On other occasions I have caught bats when just about to cast out a ledger in the evening as they think its a big moth and get caught in the line, and once I had an otter crash into the side of my keepnet one night.

 

That's the beauty of being out in the great outdoors there is always something new to see and remember.

Great pics, good to see quality fish caught by keeping it simple.

A day the lad will remember for a long time no doubt. Keep at it!

Haha Chris, that reminds me if an incident when I was a kid..

 

I was around 10 or so and I was taken fishing or hunting every weekend by Dave who was like a 2nd dad to me..

It was a Sunday morning and really early, this day Dave had brought a young lad (6ish) along it was a friend if his son and he was a real live wire.

We were walkng along the the thin causeway which runs parallel with the tidal Exe towards Topsham, our destination was the ferry that takes you accross the river and onto the canal where we planned to fish.

On one side of the causeway is the river and the other a wall of about 8ft...

The young lad had the landing net in his hand and was waving it about like a loon, when a squirrel appeared in front if us, with a swoop the kid had trapped it in the net...

The thing was hissing and going mental...dave was shouting at him not to move the net, I think the I'd was shocked that the cuddly squirrel had turned into a demon lol..

Even when Dave took the net off the little f****r was still going mad lol..

Well done mate, he looks well happy. Its days like that he will remember and will keep him going back for more. I think its the enjoyment we get as kids that keeps us at it as adults.
