While i wouldnt disagree with you Zigzag dan,the whole referee/diving/cheating thing is something new to English football......in your/my day following footie through the 80,s it was nowhere near on the level it is today......i blame foreigners in our game 100%........ive always thought we are a passionate nation about football but having just come back from Brazil ive realised the passion they have for the game is on a completely different level to ours......i spent a few days with a lovely family in the favelas around Rio these people eat sleep and breathe football, any slight advantage they can get be it cheating/diving/bullying referees they will take...players in these poorer countries will do absolutely anything it takes to get themself and their families out of the desperate conditions they are living in and thats human nature we cant blame them for that........and in turn it creeps into the game in any nation they play the game in.

Im not sure rugby as a sport has that same desperate mentality, certainly not in England where its essentially the posh kids sport and football is for the scruffs.......rugby will attract a higher class of human being in England so naturally that respect is going to be there from the start.......you have come off the terraces mate same as me so you know yourself rugby could never generate that same rivalry between areas and estates etc like football does,i dont doubt the passion rugby players have is any different to footballers but as fans its like chalk and cheese....or again, maybe rugby fans are just a higher class of human being thats all.

Ok. .so there's been plenty of criticism for the antics. .diving..play acting of the footballers in the world cup. And rightly so..It sets a bad example to kids watching that cheating is ok as long as

My son plays semi pro for Coventry Bears , hoping to get a pro contract as they are fully pro from next season , he has also played union up to county standard , ( also boxed , winning 4/5 till he had

Maybe in England but in my area theres a team in every village and most of the villages are a mile apart.

I still find it hard to believe it carries the same intensity and history that football rivalries do.........certainly on a worldwide scale........maybe im wrong.

Agree with all you say Gnash , although , unfortunately the bullying the ref thing was " home bred" by Fergie I think , a man who showed no respect for authority and encouraged his players to do the same !

I think we could all be guilty of pushing the boundaries within any competetive sport when theres so much on the line i dont see the big deal with that i think its the outright cheating/diving that really grates on most fans......maybe im naive but i still like to think no manager would promote diving/cheating in their players.

Maybe not to the extent of football gnash but some of the local derbys down here can get very emotional, same values apply though bragging rights etc. The grass roots rugby is on a different level to the regional stuff down here, its really tribal tbh. :D

Yes I agree , and theres plenty of top class rugby players ( usually All Blacks ! ) who bend the rules , in rugby a lot goes unseen , in football its so obvious its annoying , I do think managers will let a player cheat if he can get away it , Ive spent the last 12 years encouraging my son to " play his rugby on the edge " but I like to call it gamesmanship !

The diving in football is very much the seen, i hear lots of people giving opinion on some coming togethers and doubt whether they've actually played the game. You can take a speeding player off his feet with the ends of your fingers if you're so versed, same way you could walk around a rugby pitch and and snap every players ankle without needing two strikes, fact is rugby players dont get tackled around the ankle and padd-up where they do get tackled. Calling the ref Sir is also very much the seen, a game in Liegh/wigan very recently started with plenty of Sir's and ended with every player going at it and punters sheilding thier children rushing to exit the gaff.

The unseen..well that's always a different barra..
