The Hornet is a brilliant little round, but here's the fly in the ointment, factory ammo is expensive, and with the exception of Hornady, 35grain vmax, it is pretty crap, and loaded to low pressures a

Lol ultimate fox dropper as I said for informal practice then privi is good enough would I shoot fox with it we'll if it grouped well and some guns group very well with it then why not but if you want

CF isn't really the best choice for target practice TBH unless you're well healed.   Banging off 50 rounds will cost you around £55-60 with a .223. Quite an expensive hour out!   Also remember, CF

At the moment I use .22lr and hmr for rabbits and corvids and only come across the occasional fox but would like to do more foxing.

I've read all the posts about the various centrefires and as I'm not likely to be shooting anywhere near 300 yards, probably under 200, I'm considering the .22 Hornet.

I also like to do quite a bit of informal target practice and noise is a big consideration. I believe I've read that the Hornet is nearly as quiet as an hmr - is that right? Is the .222 a noisy round ?

As for accuracy I gather that the Hornet is every bit as accurate as the hmr if not better - again - is this correct?

Any suggestions and info appreciated.

I have .223 for foxing, and .17HMR for general vermin. I have an A-TEC moderator for the .223, and SAK for the .17HMR, and as the shooter, I can't tell much difference in sound, I just notice the recoil. The A-TEC was nigh on ten times as much, but it's really good.

I enjoy a bit of plinking, and now the grass is cut, I'll be experimenting with some longer shots with the .223 on our land. Prvi Partizan FMJs have the same zero point as the expanding foxing ammo I use, and where I get them from they work out at 50p per round, so half the price of premium, store-bought ammo. The .17HMR is OK for plinking, at around 18p per round, but wind affects the round a lot, so a slight breeze, at 100 yards can make the bullet drift, but I still find compensating very fun :D

Like said, plinking with a centerfire seems like an expensive hobby, depending on how many rounds you intend to go through, I just have half a dozen shots down the field. Maybe stick with your .22LR or even get an air rifle, at least the ammo's cheap :D

I suppose it's a gun I want - maybe not "need".

The ammo cost is not a big issue, I already have two .22lr's, a hmr and a pcp and a springer air rifle - all of which I use for vermin control in differing situations ( I must have over a 100 quids worth of different pellets I've been trying).

I'll get out and see if i can find some rifles to compair.

I must admit I'm rather drawn to the Hornet being that I can use it on rabbits as well and I have no intentions of long range shooting.

J_Edwards - I'll take on board what you say about the A-Tech moderator and look into them. At the moment I use a Swift Precision Nightingale in .17 on my hmr and it's very good.

You wont get much better than a PES/MAE small centerfire muzzle can on a hornet, quietened mine down a treat, if you get a hornet, as I have said reload for it, two reloading components you MUST get are the Lee universal case flare die, and Lee factory crimp die, these two cheap and cheerful bits of kit will transform your hornet from accurate, to death ray  mine would shoot a ragged one hole group with 35 grain vmax or 45 grain Sierra reloads, after including these two in my hornet reloading regime
